after a crappy week I was ready to grip again. josh almost gave me a heart attack sneaking up on me while I shoveled so, no need for a warm up.

grippers L 151 4x1 with block

R 153 4x1 with block. haven't really been using the block for a while now. it's going to get added back in on the weekend, probably not through the week.

block vulcan 1/4/7/9/11/12/13

2hp 58mm x3 50/100/120/140 x2 150/170/190/210 not sure if I did 220 or not.

2hp with bands 150# 4x5

some very poor attempts at 2x45.

3-4 1hp 75# @ 58mm

crusher 45/90/135/145/155/165/175/180 miss both

150 3x2

some hammer front lifts. these were way down right and my left elbow was acting up.

thin pinch 90# x2/2/2/3/3/3

bunch of block lifts and block tricks.

figured out a couple things. my thin pinch isn't weak. I simply do it in a strict pinch fashion rather than using my back and wrists. I think I'm going to stick with the weaker form hoping it brings my thumbs up rather than just trying to thin pinch as much weight as possible. it seems like there might be something related to this going on with my 1hp/2x45. need to work on this more.

Thin pinch was instrumental in my quest to break 100 in the 1hp - I remember Kody talking about how it helped him skyrocket to the 270 number from low 200s. Haven't done much pinch since Gripmas but I would definitely again focus my efforts on thin pinch again in the coming months before Nats.

Just curious. When you guys refer to thin pinch, what width are you using?

for me it's anywhere between 38-10MM, it stimulates the wrists and fingertips much more than normal to wide width. It also has the added effect of tightening the tendons up prior to me training contest width, just like pinching overcrush - as someone else once mentioned.

i have a thin pinch block that is 3/8"?? it's pretty thin. I feel it big time in the outside of my palm and my thumb. it's very uncomfortable for for me. this sunday I am going to do thin pinch on the 2hp device. I think that I pinned the collars a bit wide and I have to use no less than 12mm. i'll measure and make a note this weekend.

DO conv axle 340/350/350/340/340

the 2x350 I missed at lockout both times. the 340 I could lock out and hold. not huge but I think my hands were still a bit beat from sunday.

last night I was supposed to train but, instead I spent the night feeling like crap.

  • 3 months later...

so, haven't trained since the end of feb beginning of march. at the end of Jan I was 235# and weighed in at 204.5# for NAGS C on June 14. lots of stuff came up and I just lost the will to train. I was still going to the gym just not really hitting grip. also getting over a hip injury that lasted almost 2 years. so, no squatting with real weight helped with the weight loss I'm sure. and a jacked up left shoulder that was healing up during this time. anyway, things seem to be back on track now. hip is healthy, shoulder is ok, back is basically fine.

RE: NAGS C

i knew I wasn't in any shape to do anything. i tried a couple times to train and basically fooled around very briefly. my skin was so soft closing a #3 hurt too much to do. 2hp the week before the comp I missed 190 3x. and in the gym I knew my axle was down to 345ish. so, the goal was not to bomb and call everything a PR since I was in a new weight class. I didn't bomb.

this is all going off memory so, forgive me if I'm off by a bit.

grippers.

I knew getting a 150 would be huge since I couldn't get my 152 coc#3 at home. i think I ended up with 145 and 145. maybe 150 right. i had been training grippers with mms and closing 173 175# grippers in jan. the thinking was build the strength and then refine tech. well, 3.5 months off and an extended period before that with no block is not refining technique. my right hand I never felt like I got a good set and swipe. left I went 145M, 145M, 145 easy. paul knight was judging and asked me if it was the same gripper because the last one looked so easy. nope, just set and swiped it properly. going forward unless I am prepping for a MM cert I will use a block or card of some sort always.

2hp.

got 205 jumped to 220 and missed. there was huge lag time between 205 and 220. between that and some troubles with rehydrating and refooding i just bonked and didn't even really try. oh well, the crappy 205 will help me at gripmas.......

axle.

went about what I expected from gym. 350? anyway with the lack of squating and no heavy upperbody work my deadlift sucks. it was never great but I worked up the couple weeks out from NAGS C and got 435. i maybe had 10 more pounds. interestingly while it wasn't heavy it was "better". I'm thinking that now that I can start lifting again it will come up quickly. we'll see.

curl

I don't curl really. and no practice. got whatever it was I got. ehh. I really don't see me training this again unless I have to. didn't care for it. but, that's just how I feel about curls i guess.

hammer lift

no idea what I got. since I hadn't done it in forever I wasn't sure of my form. still need to bring up wrist strength though.

so, why will the crappy 2hp help me out? I bet Jedd that I would improve more in the 2hp by gripmas than he would. both in #'s and percent of lift. so, the next couple months are going to be crazy with my wife starting a new job and me probably doing the same. I'm hoping that this will help keep me distracted from the chaos and focused on training.

something else that played a role at NAGSC.

i cut a bit of water to make weight. I've done it before to give me a little breathing room for clothes, breakfast, and coffee on the day. this time I was horrible. a living nightmare the whole time. no idea what's up. I'm not sure if I'm staying down or going up to the 105's. if I stay down I will be practicing h2o manipulation a couple times between now and the next comp.

trained last night

6/25/14

20mm grippers worked up to 5x1 151# both hands

2 drop sets with 138 20mm and 2 with 100 ghp block wide.

2hp worked up to 200 and then 3 holds at 150. 150 not heavy enough.

josh came over and we went through some grippers 1hp and 1h axle. i had spent most of sat working on the car car and my hands weren't in great shape and i was kind of tired myself. still good to get together. pulled the axle suitcase and it felt very odd since i always straddle.

skin is still too tender for a long hard training session. it's coming back slowly.

tried some bending. i have 10% of the bending strength i used to have. i need to start hitting some super small bars and getting back into it a little. Mary Ann too an ultra lite 2 to about 160deg. first bend for her in about 3 years??? that was awesome.

7/8/14.

20mm grippers went really bad. my 138 felt like a brick and I missed my 146# #3 both hands. so i dropped back to the 138 and did 2 sets of coin holds to fail and 2 sets of silver bullet holds to fail. I think it might have been a longish session on sunday followed by axle rows on monday.

2hp I worked up to 200. missed, got it, missed 205. I think I'm going to start hitting singles at 190 for a while. maybe reps.

did some blocks and some block hula.

forgot to mention I did a reverse bend. a rail tie. then I looked through stuff for something else and the next jump was to a grade 5. i have some stock to cut down so I won't hit a wall like that again.

the v-bar was just singles and does not include weight of v-bar. I hadn't pulled it in forever and just wanted to see where I was at. i think I topped out left but had some more right. more importantly instead of puitting it back behind everything I left it out so I'm more likely to remember to hit it again.

the singles were also to full lockout with control at top and a simple handshake grip rather than competition grip.

terrible night with grippers. on 8/5/14 i did inch trainer rows at the gym. i think they're taking too much out of me to do them the night before I grip. trying to decide if I should drop them or keep them. right now I think keep them unless i have grip planned for the next day.

TGA 2hp program.

this sunday is 1hp. wednesday will be 2hp on the TGA program. unless something dramatic happens I'll be bumping the weight again. very difficult to resist testing right now since i feel stronger each week even with bigger weights and shorter times. I'm trying to be disciplined and wait until after KK to test. then I'll have a good idea where I'm at and what to expect for gripmas.
