Took the #3 in to work tonight to do some CCS and PKS work. Since it's the week of WSH I wanted to keep the one gripper workout of the week fairly unstressful on my hands. I managed to kill it PKS but before the CCS attempts I was helping a guy in another department move a fairly heavy but extremely cumbersome part and the dumb ass dropped his end and it kinda twisted in my hands and I felt a pop on the backside of my right hand dead center in the middle. It didn't hurt or anything so I didn't think about it. However, when I tried the #3 CCS as soon as it got to about half way I got a super sharp pain in my hand where it popped. I gave it some rest and warmed my hand up real good and tried again and same thing, about half way it hurt real bad. Again, I let it rest about 45 minutes or so, warmed it up real good and again bad pain. When I got home I decided to lightly test it with a few things and with grippers #2 and below I have no pain but when I tried the #2.5 the pain was back. Tried RT up to 157 lbs. and no pain at all. IM hub up to 33 lbs. (my max) and no pain at all. I even tried my pinch block both 2 handed and single handed and no pain. I'm glad that there's no pain on the other exercises but it sucks that now, a month before cert day I hurt my stupid hand. Oh well, if I have to postpone it I will, no biggie. The rest of the week is going to be rest for the competition this weekend.

To bad Russ. Sound like you've got a partial ligament or tendon tear. 6 weeks+ minimum, could be 3 months before you see full strength back...I'd see a doc though and err on the side of caution.

Just saw this. Sorry about the accident! This sucks. How is it doing now? You were on a roll!

It doesn't hurt right now but I'm not doing anything with it and I don't want to "test" it and take a risk of doing more damage. I thought I'd be real disappointed in having to postpone the cert but I'm actually not. I think I would be if I was still a long way from being able to close the #3 CCS but before I strained the right hand I was getting about 8-9 of 10 attempts CCS without too much trouble so when I start training again it should come back pretty quickly. Next year the #3 and maybe even the #3.5 certs will go down!

Rolling Thunder

132x1

142x1

152x1

162x1

167x1

173x1

175.5x1 (PR no chalk)

147.5x20 (PR for 20 reps)

This is the only thing I'm trying right now grip wise. Managed a new PR without chalk and could only get another 5 lbs. about an inch with chalk. What I'm doing is washing and drying my hands then rubbing them together until they get hot and feeling sticky then do a pull. It seems to work as good as chalk right now. For reps I added 2.5 lbs. over the last workout and barely...BARELY managed to squeek out the full 20 reps. I had to not count 2 of them and redo them though cuz reps 15 and 18 only came up an inch or so but I was able to redo both and get them to full dead. I'm happy with a couple pound increase each workout :mosher

  • 4 months later...

Alright, I'm back to training again. This is my first week of heavy training after a couple weeks of taking it light. The first week was a couple days of using the 2.5 with 5 singles just to test the waters. Last week it was 5 singles per workout with the #3. I managed a few CCS and 100% MMS righty and no CCS lefty with a few MMS.

This week I started back with the full 10 single workouts. I'm doing Monday and Thursday 3.5 choked and Tuesday and Friday #3 MMS\CCS.

2/28/11

3.5 choked to 3/4"-10-no closes but pretty close

3/1/11

#3 MMS-10-all closes righty, none lefty but was close.

Grippers

MM1 replica (choked to 3/4")-10x1-almost all closes righty, none lefty but was fairly close.

The MM1 replica showed up yesterday and measured at 164.25 lbs. so I decided to try it choked tonight.

Grippers

#3-6x1-all closes righty and none lefty, but close.

The plan was to do 10 singles but my left forearm was killing me again. It's starting to piss me off cuz I gave it over 3 months of complete rest and it's right back to hurting again.

%*#! I know how that feels man! Try to back off! Hey, don't know how it works in the states, but does your healthcare insurance give any room

to see a specialist or something? All the best with your arm! At least it isn't your strongest arm, but still, I know you want to let both arms go equal op in strength...

Sorry about your left, man!

Hey, Richard Sorin has had encouraging words many times for certain very strong people to "take the challenge" while they are strong, because maybe it's not always going to be there. That's big-time paraphrasing I'm sure, but do you know what I mean?

I know you really want to do the certs righty and lefty, but I would encourage you to get them done and claim your place while it's working for you. If you were to post a video of a right and left CCS close after the fact, it won't mean any less. :)

Go get it man.

I getcha Matt. I'm not going to stop training for the cert by any means. As for certifying with either hand, the main reasoning behind that thinking is so I don't start thinking it's ok to maintain a big strength difference between hands.

All the certs are just benchmarks along the road to getting strong/healthy hands and I don't want to sacrifice balance in hand strength any more than I would want one leg or one arm way stronger than the other. Therefore, if I need to slow my training a bit (not advance to the next goal gripper as soon) then I'll do that if necessary. It may (or may not) hinder the speed that the overall strength gains come but that's acceptable if it means less or even no forearm pain. Besides I was rather enjoying the sets of mini closes I was doing with the 2.5 and might reincorporate that into my regimen again.

Grippers

MM1 replics(PKS)-8x1-got several closes righty and very close lefty.

I'm happy with this workout. I felt strong and think that if I was using the #3 I may have got several closes with it lefty based on how close I got with this gripper tonight. The strength is definitely coming back :mosher

No workout today since I got whatever plague my daughter brought home from pre-school. It's a stay in bed and wait to die day for me :whacked

Grippers

#3(MMS)-10x1-killed it righty, got within a fat electron on several singles lefty.

Energy was way down tonight due to not keeping much food down cuz of being sick. My hands felt good and fairly strong but my focus was off and I couldn't keep the intensity up. Still I'm pretty happy with this workout all things considered. I'm hoping to be able to get a lefty MMS 3 close on vid within the next couple weeks.

Really funny to see that we're both beeing plagued by injuries and the 'burden' of having small children that bring home one headcold / flu

after another from pre-school and school. Well. In fact it´s not funny but I guess being father in the states isn´t that much different than being father

in Europe :upsidedwn Just read my latest traininglog entry...Hope you get well soon and can go on with your training.

Sometimes I think that the black plague wasn't spread by rats but rather by little kids :upsidedwn

No forearm pain this week at all so hopefully that's in the past. It may have just been caused by stepping up to a full training schedule last week.

Grippers

2.5(MMS)-5x5-I decided that since this is the last grip training day this week I'd do some reps with the 2.5. I bet my 5 MMS reps with my 2.5 have Gabriel and Paul quaking with fear...or maybe that's laughter :)

Not grip related but I got a good workout today taking my 4 year old daughter to the lake and going kayaking for the first time ever. Nice little lat workout! I might have to buy a kayak now cuz that was tons of fun :mosher

I've been wanting to try a good TNS with the 2.5 for a few days but had no chalk so after getting some today I did several TNS closes with the Trainer through the 2.5 and I got one of the righty closes on vid. My hands still feel pretty fresh so I'll still do my normal gripper workout at work tonight.

Grippers

MM1 replica(MMS)-5x1-3 closes righty, very close lefty.

The plan was to do a full workout but by single #5 my hands were toast due to the TNS work I did this morning. It was still a good and satisfying workout that leaves me looking forward to tomorrow night with the 3.

I tried to TNS the MM1 after the workout and got to just past parallel. That's pretty decent at this point I guess.

Grippers

#3(MMS)-7x1-getting closer and closer to a lefty close. At this rate I should close it lefty within 2 weeks. Stay tuned for the vid :)

I stopped after 7 singles cuz my forearms were getting a little achy. Probably from the few TNS attempts this morning with the #3...which was a mistake. Still a ways to go on that one even righty.

My gym membership is up in June and I've been debating renewing it since I haven't been very consistent in going the last several months. With all the OT I've been working lately it's hard to get up early enough to get to the gym before they close the daycare area for my daughter so I talked to my wife the other day about putting a power rack in the house and today she not only agreed but was also talking about setting up dumbell racks and other stuff as well. Needless to say I'm pretty stoked cuz now I'll be able to lift before work AND after work without having to go anywhere.
