Let's put it into context: i'm no grip freak. I have a rather poor genetics and just hope the #3 is within my limits :).

Right hand:

#1 : 17 reps, new PR (i only do those big sets from times to times)

#2 : 2 attempts (both failed)

Left hand:

#1 : 5 reps

#2 : 2 negatives

Tomorow, thick bar work.

have you tried any overcrushes, or strap holds?

I prefer overcrushes, harder to evaluate progress but I don't lose any energy trying to set my strap. These really helped me close the #3.

I am not convinced that negatives help me, but if you feel progress, keep at them!

train hard

- 72.6 lbs*1 warm up R and L

- 81.4 lbs*1 R and L

- 94.6 lbs*1 L only

- 116.6 lbs*2 R only

- 132 lbs*1 R only New PR

- 94.6 lbs*1  hold (as long as i can), R & L

Hi David (back to english :) ),

no i didn't try overcrushes.

What i like with reps or negatives is indeed the easy evaluation of progress.

But I'll try overcrushes from now on.

How many overcrushes do you think works best (in a workout).

Thanks!

not sure how you evaluate progress on negatives : time?

As for number of reps, for me it was about 3-5 overcrushes for about 5-8 seconds giving it everything I had. After that, I feel the intensity isn't there anymore. I feel that working these without the appropriate intensity does not do much for pure strength. It might help tendon development (maybe) and recovery, though.

Oh and I used to work out twice a week (plus climbing).

hope this helps.

david

ps: I suspect it shouldn't be to hard to make a straphold setting where you don't need to set the strap yourself (with an elastic band for instance), but I used not to like the feeling in my hands. I think I'll try them again one of these days.

david,

not sure how you evaluate progress on negatives : time?

i evaluate it by the distance between the handles: i use both hands to close the gripper and then i squeeze it as hard as i can with only one hand, check the distance between the handles and finish the movement.

Did you only do overcrushes or also attempts with the next gripper ?

Thanks for the coaching ;)

mostly overcrushes; maybe one attempt per session (when I started getting really close).

Also, when I bought the #3, I had been closing the #2 for about 6-8 months, and at my first try, I was about 5-8mm from closing it (I must also say that I don't think my #3 is a very hard one- the handles are pretty close).

I don't really believe in doing multiple attempts where I'm still 2 cm off closure (unless you're working your sweep).

this training probably worked for me because I didn't really need to work my sweep (the handles being quite close).

good luck.

Gripper training today (did my pinch yesterday):

Warmup : #1 *1 L and R

Attempt of the day :

             #2*1  Right hand : failed ( 1mm away from it  ??? )

I feel that i will close it consistently within 3 weeks

Overcrushes:

Ahem...

So overcrushes :

#1*5  R and Left, it's really cool to feel the extra power with my right hand. Mostly when i remember my first impression with the #1 the day i received my grippers :)

Wait, i was so unhappy after writing my last post that i picked up my #2 and squeezed like a mad and got it to around 1mm (1/20")...it's beyond my comprehension  ???

  • 3 weeks later...

Did my gripper workout today and closed the #2 again (i had closed it once around a month ago)!

I have the feeling that i'll close it consistently from now on ;)

But i'm still 1/3" away from closing it with my left hand...

What i predicted came true: i can now close it consistently with my right hand ! :happy:happy

Though i'm still 1/5" away with my left .

I now train everyday: 2/3 attempts on the #2 and then 1 attempt on the #3 with negatives if need be.

When i'm less than 5mm away from the #3 (and fifty years old :laugh ) i'll resume overcrushes.

Thanks Jonas,

got the feeling that the reps aren't too far away by now !

Yes i have a #3 and that's quite a different matter...

What about closing our #3s before the 31th of December 2003 ? ;)

Amaury.

That sounds like a great idea!

I don't know if I will make it, but I'll do my very best.

Jonathan, how far away are you from your #3?

I have taken a picture when trying to close my #3. I can send it to you guys if you want to compare. I can't say how much it is left but I can say it is much... ;)

Train focused,

Jonas

I just managed to close the #1 last week as I just got them in the mail last Friday :blush

I haven't even opened up the #2, or #3 they sent me. Thought I might give it a try tonight, I'll let you know how it went.

Jonas,

I can say it is much...

likewise (1.2" on my #3)! :blink

Don't hesitate to send your pics! I'll try to take some from time to time so you can check my progress too...if there is some :stuart

Jonathan : Jonas and i aren't grip freaks (but Jonas tends to progress faster than i) so i'm sure you'll be able to catch up in the "2003 race". ;)

Anyway, i wouldn't like to be able to close my #3 tomorow cause i know what i can do and if i can close it in almost no time then it's no grip feat...

Exactly, if the grippers were too easy then they wouldn't be a worthy challenge. Man I got to do a lot of catching up with you two as I'm an inch away from closing my #2 !!!!!!

Yes, that's very true. A goal must be something that will require WILLPOWER and that won't happend over a night.

If you send me your e-mail adresses I can send you some pictures.

Train good
