Easyweight's Grip Log

Well I've been lurking around for a while now, and have finally decided to post a log in an effort to keep up with my grip training. Aside from lifts such as deadlifting and such, I virtually stopped doing any accessory grip work for nearly 6 months or more.

I use to train grip A LOT, maybe even over trained it to some extent, because I started bending also. I initially made some serious gains, but then my grip strength began to decline. So I stopped working on it for a while. Amazingly after taking a break for a month or so I started picking up 'blobs' one day and I got a huge PR on our 45lber (half a 90) in both hands, where previously I was having trouble with the 42.5 (half an 85) in just the right. I also pulled 290 on the V-bar soon after that, but unfortunately haven't done that since. Such is the way my grip works.

Since taking a break seemed to really improve my grip, I'm going to experiment a little and maybe train grip/pinch rather hard two-three times a week, then slack off and just do light grip/pinch work for the next, and maybe take periodic week+ breaks. I don't know if this will work, but it certainly can't hurt. At least I hope not hehe.

So to begin I'll post Monday's grip training. I only returned to my grippers last Thursday (8/9/07) after a very long break. I was nearly closing my CoC #2.5 before the break, but Thursday I only got one close in my right on the #2. Monday was much better.

Grippers 8/13/07--

Warm up ultra light crappy gripper (comparable to a BB spring clip in weight) 1x40 each hand and then finished with several two finger-thumb pinch closes.

CoC #1: MMSx1x10 each hand

CoC #1.5: TNSx2 right hand and 1 in the left; MMSx3x5 each hand.

CoC #2: MMSx3x1 in right hand and 2x1 in the left

CoC #2.5: MMSx1 missed right hand by about a 1/4 inch.

Wat I did with the #1 and #1.5 is start with MMS then just repped the crush. I think next time I'm going to throw in some negatives or maybe just more reps on the #1.5, as I feel I could have done more work.

Over all, I'm still pretty much a newb-intermediate grip guy, so if anyone has some advice, I'm all ears. Or eyes as it is in this case :upsidedwn

Great to see you posting a log here bud. Any 3" bar work gonna be included? Haha!

Thanks Matt! I'm thinking about doing my speed deadlift with a thick bar on Thursday. The 3 incher does get neglected, but I don't know if I can rep my DL weight on it. I may just give it a try though. In any case I may end up doing some holds.

Are you guys competing at Beowulf's Crucible this weekend?

I am not. I don't think any of the other guys are either.

Hmmm, I'd swear I heard Mike say he was competing this weekend. So I figured you might be also. My hearing and brain turn to pudding when I lift though haha. At least my hearing becomes very selective. So I probably didn't hear him right.

Up to the bottom of the plate that is on it is 30" so the handle is I'm guessing 32".

Cool thanks Matt!

I've been sick as a dog so I haven't been lifting, but I did a little bit of gripper work on Thursday.

CoC #1

TNSx2x10 each hand

MMSx2x10 each hand

That was pretty much it. Hopefully I'll be back to the normal routine tomorrow, but I'm still not up to par as of today. Next week is my off week for grip anyway.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well this last week was suppose to be my heavy week, but things just didn't really work out that way. I did manage to do a little bit of grip, however. So I'm going to call it a lighter week, and hit it hard this week. Then cycle back down to a lighter week.

Thursday--

2" Axle Deadlifts:

1x5 @ 90

1x5 @ 180

1x3 @ 270

5x3 @ 290

I actually lost the 2nd rep of the 4th set. My grip couldn't hold it anymore, so I finished with alt grip.

BB Reverse Curl:

5x8 @ 70

Saturday--

Front, Rear and Over Head Lever w/32" Sledge Handle:

2x10 with only about 4 pounds on the end.

V-Bar, worked up to heavy single:

RHx230

LHx255

V-bar is coming around, but I don't train it enough. I actually worked up to 275, but only broke it off the ground about an 1" in my right hand. I'd like to get back up to my 290 max sometime soon.

Well that's all for last week. Heavy grip work for this next week. We'll see if I can get that #2.5 closed. Wish me luck.

I tore stuff instead of working with grippers last night.

Just quartered a couple decks of dollar store specials. Still can't get the eighth tear out of these. I had to split the stack in half. Then I tore into a casino quality deck, but didn't quite make it through. I ended up shaving some of the stack to finish. Finally I tore up an old phone book that has been laying around. That got ripped two times length ways, once across the back and then again length ways with what was left. Not a lot, but I definitely felt it by the time I was done.

  • 1 year later...

Well, I stopped training specifically for grip quite a while ago. But I've decided to resurrect this thread to again try to keep up on it. My grip hasn't really gone anywhere except my ability to hold onto FW handles and a BB better. I guess I've finally managed to quarter a deck of casino cards and close my CoC#2.5 consistently in my right hand and I'm getting very close in my left.

My plan is to mainly focus on wrist strength, grippers, pinch and tearing - which I really enjoy doing. So here we go again.

Short-term Goals:

Casino Cards in <7seconds (current PR)

CoC#2.5 left

Pinch Two 35s (I may already be able to do this, not sure)

47.5lb Blob (1/2*95)

Goals for 2009:

CoC#3

RT 190+ (currently at 170ish right hand)

1" V-bar 290 again!

One-hand No hook BB DL 250+ (currently 235 I believe)

The BLOB

Those are some of my goals. I'm sure there are other things to add to the list, but those are the ones I want the most.

12/3/08

Sumo DL:

Up to 405x5 DO hand

I'd like to be able to do this volume convo also, but for some reason I lose my grip around 3. Strange.

Dennis Rodgers Wrist Curls:

3x8-12 @ 37.5 ~ offset load

EZ-bar Front/Rear Lever:

3x8

First time doing these. I held onto the closest camber to the collar. I think it might add a twist to offset the load on either side so you have sort of a counter weight at the top that you have to fight a little more on the negative downswing. We'll see.

Cable Reverse Wrist Curl:

3x10

I hate doing reverse wrist curls with BBs, DBs and plates because I don't feel I get a good ROM. So I tried this today. I just dropped the pulley to the floor and rested my forearm along the L-shaped bar that is attached to the cable machines, with my hand hanging off the end. Worked nicely.

BW Hold:

1x30sec

12/7/08

Bending:

5 x 3/8"x6" ~ I have no idea what these bolts are, but they're not terribly difficult

1 x 1/4"x7" ~ hot rolled

All really light bending today since I haven't done any real bending in a VERY long time. I was thinking about starting bending again, but as before it irritates my elbows. It will probably affect my pressing, which is more important to me, so this probably won't be a regular part of my training.

Phonebooks:

2x1/2 + Backs ~ 1 3/4" local

Casino Cards:

1/2 Decks x 2 x quartered

1 x Full Deck x half

Grippers:

A Few questionable TNS and CCS CoC #2 in each hand

1x3 CoC#2 parallel set each hand

1x2 CoC#2 parallel set each hand + 10 second hold on second rep

Hands were pretty thrashed by this point. Need to get back into doing some decent volume.

That's it.

Yeah, Matt, I know, that's what really matters :dry

I DLed today. Worked up to some DO at 405 then hookx3 and 5 at 455 and some other DO DLing stuff. Then,

One-hand No Hook DL, each hand:

1x5 @ 135

1x2 @ 185

1x1 @ 205

1x1 @ 215 ~ didn't lockout with right hand, hmmmm.....probably not the best thing to do right after DLing

D. Rodgers Wrist Curls, w/6' straight bar:

1x10 @ 37.5

3x10ish @ 42.5 ~ straight bar is definitely more difficult

EZ-bar Lever:

2x8-10 Front and Rear

Cable Reverse Wrist Curl:

3x10

Stretched

Since I don't DL every week, this will work better on off weeks.

Grippers:

Parallel Sets

1x20 light gripper w/u + several two finger-thumb pinches w/same gripper both hands

1x15 CoC#1.5 both hands

1x10 CoC#2 ~ left hand I barely got 5, ugh

1x2 CoC#2.5 Right hand, and very nearly 3

1x1 CoC#2.5 LEFT!

1x2 CoC#2.5 Right, 3rd definitely wasn't happening

A few TNS CoC#2 in right, GOOD

Several TNS CoC#1.5 both hands

1x5 CoC#2 assisted both hands + 10 second hold on last

1x15 CoC#1.5 both hands

I've pretty happy with this. Will probably start considering the CCS in the near future.

  • 4 weeks later...

Well I was on a bit of a hiatus due to final exams in school, the holidays and being sick, but it's all over now.

Bending

6"x1/4" Carriage Bolts x 3 ~ easy warm up stuff

7"x1/4" HRS x 1

6"x1/4" HRS x 1

6"x1/4" CRS x 1 ~ all bent surprisingly easy up to here

6"x5/16" ??? x 1 ~ not sure what it is (is threaded full length), but it eluded me back when I was bending, if I can call it such, regularly. It went down easy today.

5"x1/4" G5 x yeah right! ~ I didn't know what it was until I did some research

5"x1/4" HRS x1 ~ yowch!! That was tough, but got that bugger squashed down to just over 1 1/4" spread

Grippers, Parallel Set

1x10 CoC #1.5 both hands

1x20 CoC #1.5 both hands

1x5 CoC #2 both hands

1x10 CoC #2 right and only 3 in left, ugh

1x17 CoC #1.5 left

Stretched and iced down the forearms. Good.

OK, I need to figure a few things out here about bending. I'm still a newbie for all practical purposes, but I feel pretty confident in my form and such. I'm not too familiar with the different stocks for bending (but researching and slowly figuring it out), so it gets a little confusing when posting my workouts. I also don't know what all I have in my bag of nails and bolts, but I'm figuring it out. I'll be making a trip to the hardware store soon to get more stuff so I'll have a better idea.

I managed a 1/4"x5" piece of HRS yesterday and according to Bender's website, the next step is 5/16 HRS stock. I also absolutely melted a Blue Nail yesterday, so I'll also move onto a piece of 1/4"x5.5" CRS. Depending on how all that goes, I think possibly the Red Nail is within the near future. I need to get myself some 6"-7" Grade 5s and give them a run first though.

Since I'm getting the bending bug again, I think I need a plan and goals. My routine will be roughly as follows:

Wednesdays:

Wrist movements, like lever, sledge twists, wrist curls, etc.

Static Holds

DO Hand BB and Axle lifts as well as one-handed lifts

I'd like to throw Pinch in here, but as of now that's not really feasible

Sundays:

Bending/Tearing +

Grippers

That's basically what I've been doing and it seems to work for me. I have the urge to bend more frequently, but that's what made me stop a couple years ago because it put too much strain on my elbows. Since I also train for strongman, that's not something I'm willing to tolerate much of as it interferes with lifting. If I get back into it and feel I can handle more I may bump one more day for high volume bending in there, maybe on a Friday.

Short-term Goals:

5/16"x7" HRS

1/4"x5" CRS

7" and 6" G5

Mid to Long-term Goals:

Red Nail and beyond

I'll probably post up some vids next weekend. Please comment as I can definitely use some advice on many facets of my grip and bending training.

OK, a little change of plans. Sundays won't work for bending since I will be pressing Mondays. So aside from today, I think I will be bending on Fridays and doing wrist on Tuesdays possibly.

Bending:

60d Spiral Timber Spike x 1 ~ wow, almost pointless they're so easy

60d " " x 2 at a time ~ still stupid easy

307A OF Carriage Bolts x 2 ~ not the same time

Hot Rolled Blue x 1

Blue Nails x 3?

Hot Rolled Red x 0 ~ not even kinked

1/4"x5" HRS x 1 ~ much easier this time

Today wasn't bad, however, I do need to recant my expectation of getting a Red Nail soon. The 5/16" HRS wasn't to even be kinked today. Also of the Blues that I did today, the first was from stuff I bought at Home Depot some three years ago and was much easier than the newer stuff I bought yesterday from a different source. Which leads me to believe it's just differences in batches or the earlier stuff isn't CRS at all but possibly HRS. Who knows, but what I have now I'm certain of. Will have to work on it a bit.

I'll have a vid of some of today's bending up soon. Any advice is welcome.
