bencrush
Another gripper log might be just the thing most of you don't want to see any more of. But I don't care about that. I'm putting it to paper (so to speak) to push myself a bit more than just writing the workouts down would. I finally managed to contact Warren Tetting regarding certifying on the Super Master. I order a narrow SM that fits my hand measurement today (Monday). I can't wait to get it and see if I can close it or not. I've been concentrating on Table No Set closes for a week or so to the exclusion of set closes. Tetting gave me some advice: "only do no set closes and you'll get much stronger than with the set." Enough said. And obviously if I want to cert with his rules...I'll do no sets. I am actually more excited about the prospect of certing with him than with IronMind at this time. I'll be looking forward to certing with the SM and then moving on to the GM. I'll list some previous (still recent) workouts in the next post. bencrush
6-17-04 was the day that I received a narrow Super Master in the mail. I got it from Austin Slater. Thanks again, by the way. I wasn't sure if it would be possible for me to cert with it but was quite pleased with it. I found out when speaking to Tetting that this gripper was too narrow for my hand, which did not surprise me as my hand is a bit longer than Austin's. I already had a normal width Super Master but the narrow version was noticeably easier to close. ishred
wow ben, thats alot of volume. I'm lucky if i do 20 reps per hand. good job
bencrush
Thanks Ishred. It hasn't been too uncommon for me to do 500 reps with the Trainer (each hand) followed by 250+ with the Master and then some assorted other gripper closes for another 100 or so reps. That's the beauty of working a job where I can train the grippers almost at my leisure. You'd think I'd be closing the #4 by now with the insane volume. Yeah I know it doesn't work that way. Slayer
I was at Warren's last Sunday and just grabbed an SM and tried to do a no set close of it, but missed by a significant margin. I been thinkin of asking him for one based on my have length to try to certify on. Looks like you'll be shutting that SM pretty soon based on your last couple entries. Keep training hard. bencrush
Thanks Joe. What is your hand length and what can you shut with a set? There tends to be a big difference between no set strength and set strength at first-then there is a gradual break in period where the no sets feel almost as easy as the sets. That's been my experience at least.
austinslater
Ben just came across your log and everything looks great! Im looking forward to seeing you close the sm and gm in the near future. Im gettting back into no set training as well. God Bless buddy Austin
bencrush
Austin, thanks a lot, especially coming from the first person to cert with Tetting. I'm very tempted to never do a set close again...but I have to admit it's still kind of fun to close a slightly heavier gripper once in a while. bencrush
7-21-04 I got my Narrow Grand Master that I ordered from Weightlifter's Warehouse. The inside handle width is 2.5" which isn't the correct size to certify with, but it will be good enough to train with until I order the correct one from Tetting. Tore it out of the box in a fury, insanely psyched up to attempt a no set close with it. Missed the first attempt. Rested a bit and stretched my hands a while. Table No Set-SMASHED it shut and held it for a 2 count! That made my day. I got one more TNS close with the NGM. 3 more attempts and decided it was time to stop the TNS. I went directly to setting the gripper-which for me has always meant positioning the gripper in the hand with no squeezing the handles together-and got 5 singles before calling it quits with the big NGM. I also did 4 TNS closes with the NSM for good measure and then threw in 5 TNS closes with the Trainer. Does rule #4 apply here for that last bit?
