David Horne
Sam, Glad you like it. Scale your equipment. Also is 56mm your best width? Try a few others and see. David

CoC#3
been training bits and pieces recently every one at work seems to be sick at the moment so it's more shifts for me, slackin on the total body training aswell cos i don't get enough sleep to recover from it night before last (21/02/08) i did some grippers, did some reps on the #3 the other day got a few sets of 5 and 6 RH also closed RB330N again RH did a bit of work with a BBSE LH, best attempt was about 3mm. last night i did this, rolling thunder thumbless LH 90kgx1,2,3,2,5(PR),3 (older handle), RH 90kgx3,2,3,3,2 (older handle) quite easy curls and stuff with the 3.5'' DB 2 hand pinch (66mm) warmups up to equ+60kg then, equ+62.5kgx1 equ+65kg(PR)x1,1 (ok) equ+60kgx1,1,1,1,1 (all with hold at the top) a bit of tissue was used on the thumb webbing. this stops the tears but you don't get as good a grip. the pinch feels good at 66mm i think if anything this is still a bit too narrow. this width gave me a PR of the equipment (the discs, spacers, scaffold tube, collars etc...) + 65kg added weight. Fairly happy but need equ+80kg by the time of the brits. might give 70mm+ a run. did some weaver stick work aswell Edited January 23, 2008 by CoC#
The Mac
Interesting that you find 66mm to be the best thickness.
lifesnotfair
Interesting that you find 66mm to be the best thickness. Just a random thought on this: Sam always seemed to be better at inverted closes. And when he met viper and Mobster, I think one of them said he had a big space between index finger and thumb, or something like that, don't remember the exact words. So it could make sense that he finds a thicker width best for his pinching?
mobsterone
It can seen on some of his gripper videos on youtube. I have, as per my log, also done a combination of thick (70mm) and less thick (44mm-66mm) pinch work. Re the tissue - agree. Try 1-2 singles without then, as this is what works for me at least, a few more as soon as you get the skin starting to go with the small pad of tissue in place. It's also worth looking at the towel and glove work David has used to, as he put it, save the skin. Plus they make you work harder. I did a glove AND towel single on the Dec 22nd event with 80-kilos total load.
CoC#3
Chris, yep. 70mm+ may even be better for me. I am used to training with 2 20kg plates so this may have something to do with it. Arturo , indeed. My normal closes are catching up though. Inverted i am around a BBSE level and can always give my #4 a decent squeeze. Steve, I used a kitchen towel last night and did 5 easy reps with ~ 70kg straight after 3 without. (still at 66mm) last night i did some pinch (70kg some work with towel) I also did 4,6,5 reps MM1 Lh and 8,9,4,4 reps RH (opening to parallel) - just missed 10 with the RH. CoC#3
at home - i bought a 2 hand pinch kit from David Horne. Grippers yesterday weren't bad. I took it easy LH as the skin still hasn't healed from the BBSE and #4 work. RH i did #3 for a few sets of 4 and 5 parallel reps. Pinch felt off yesterday because skin was very sore, not torn but on the first single with 82.5kg the sin felt like it was burning and started to redden. So had to do it with a thick towel. Worked up to 77.5kg. I must have 3-4 days off pinch for the skin to heal up. RT was good, each hand getting 15 singles with 90kg and 3 singles with 92.5kg. CoC#3
at home I thought u were going to take Big Mark to cully ? Good nos on the RT he said he was gonna go work. he is expecting a baby so is working a lot of hours. Big Mark is a top bloke he fills up at my garage a lot - trained with him a couple of times, strong dude! he did 100kg for 5 reps full ROM on seated militaries. Thanks. My RT has come on nicely. My pinch is what needs to come up now! Edited January 28, 2008 by CoC#

maidenfan
Ya, good job on the RT - big lifts there!
CoC#3
thanks tja and maidenfan. Felt strong last night. I am thinking that if i can get up to the stage where my work weight on my RT in training is around 110kg for 5-6 singles the my max would be near 120kg. The RT that i have been using still spins nicely and doesn't stick but it has had a lot of use, so isn't 'new'. So weights at the comp will depend how free spinning the handle that is used on the day is.

lifesnotfair
Can you lift more weight with a thumbless grip? Do you kinda curl your wrist to do this? You must be wrist curling big weights by now then.

CoC#3
cheers lads. Arturo, on June 14th last year i managed 100kg on the RT with the thumb around. Yesterday's session - pinch, equ+60kg (82.5kg) 10 singles 6 singles with a thin towel these got stronger each time and in the end were more like high pulls. rolling thunder, 85kgx2 for 8 sets each hand. Hold at the top. grippers, 7 sets of 10 with #2 (each hand) work is a mess at the moment i'm having to work the afternoon/evening shift for a few days struggling to get used to sleeping around these hours after doing nothing but nights for a month. CoC#3
yesterday i did weaver stick and grippers up to #3x6 today i did pinch, up to equ+62.5kg (85kg) (3 singles) and equ+65kg (3 singles with thin towel)
CoC#3
grippers, #3x6 nearly got the 7th RH, also mm1 for triples LH a few sets of 20 with the #2 both hands
CoC#3
grippers after a warmup with the #2 and MM1 RH - #3x1 , #3.5xvn,vvn,vn,closed with thumb pressing against doglegx2, RB330Nxvvvn these were the closest i have ever had the #3.5 RH. LH - MM1x3, #3x2, RB330Nxvvvn, #3.5xvnx3 (skin is still affecting these a lot) A 3.54 rated gripper with both hands in the comp would be nice this year.
