My back is wrecked.

I've been too angry and upset about this whole thing to get on here but my back is really wrecked right now. It actually caused me to pinch my sciatic nerve last week. I was in a bed for two days. Literally could not feel my leg. I even got a fever from it and passed out at work while walking around. It feels much better, but by the end of the day at work I'm limping bad and my back is torn up.

When I get back to training I think I'm going to have to do it only 2 days a week until I can figure this back thing out. Any ideas for two days a week Matt?

I am really sorry about what is happening to your leg & back. I know it can be one of the most mentally taxing things to keep it together when nerve pain becomes involved as well from experience with my last neck injury (compressed brachial plexus on lefty), and my current situation (same thing, again). I'll help any way I can buddy, and you have my personal # if you have questions you'd rather not post or if that is more convenient.

The first questions to figuring out this two days a week problem would be:

-what is your current pain level, and what motions make the pain worse?

-have you had any tests done to determine the exact cause of the pain, or are you doing any physical therapy?

-are you looking to add in lower body or strictly upper body?

Again, I'm sorry about this crap. I should have probably checked up before you had to post, that's my fault.

My pain level is very high. I can't lift at all, upper or lower. I still have to go to work to make money but I've left early everyday. It's much better than last week when I couldn't leave my bed but it's still an issue. I leave work early everyday and just sit at home to be able to work the next day for a few hours. So right now I don't think I can lift. I'm half awake writing this right now just due to being tired from dragging my leg around all day.

I haven't had tests as (of course) when all of this was happening I was having issues with my health insurance. That's all figured out now and good but I'm short on money to pay the deductible I'll have to pay when I go to the doctors. I'm hoping by next week I can get there and see what's going on.

I'll keep you posted.

2/7/14

Squat

Returned today. I'm going to go back to 5/3/1 for the time being so I don't have to thikn about anything, I can just go and do what I need to do. Plus it will allow me to be a bit more flexible with training days and injuries/soreness to my back.

Squat (5 week)

85x5

105x5

125x3

135x5 (belt on)

155x5 (belt on)

Had one more set (175x5) but stopped it here. My right leg is much much weaker than my left and was really sore. Not pain or discomfort, just sore and worked.

On a side note, I forgot my belt and used the one they have for you to use at the gym. I loved it. It felt so much better than mine. I felt so unstable at 125 and 135 felt completely different (in a good way). The width of the belt is a little smaller but the actual thickness of the belt was much thicker than mine. Also it was very broken in. Just felt way better.

30 pull ups (3 different hand positions)

abs

Called it there.

Great to see you get a leg workout in, I hope the pain is down somewhat! I might suggest you include some single leg work for the side with weakness so it catches up before any muscle imbalance unrelated to nerves occur. Sometimes a nice worn in belt makes all the difference! Are you keeping your belt in a loop when you aren't wearing it to stretch it out?

Matt- Yeah the belt is always in the loop. I don't know, I just liked how much thicker that one was.

Well my leg issue has come back. When I was squatting I had zero pain for a few days but today I relapsed and had issues walking around. I was going to go bench tonight but just can't and I'm too scared to make my leg worse.

I applied for finanicial aid at the hospital and if I get accepted I'll be heading to the doctors. Hopefully that will be soon.

Update:

Things are getting better with my leg/back. I went to the doctors last week and she is trying to cure me without spending much money. She gave me a week's worth of Prednizone to see if it could help the swelling. So far it hasn't done anything except make me sick and moody. I guess the next step she wants is PT, something I'm reluctant to do since I've done PT before for my back. I'm still trying to get an estimate on how much financial assistance I could get before I schedule an MRI.

I can't do anything though. All energy is towards trying to work 5 days a week. On the weekend I just lay around and wait for Monday. I can't even train upper body.

Dylan: Good to hear from you, I have an idea and will be getting in touch with you asap via phone. I hope you're managing ok, this medical business is worse than robbery. We both know how useless PT is, and an MRI is an official diagnosis but mine cost around 3000 before insurance.

Update:

I ran out of my prednizone and went back to the doctors today. Actually, yesterday I went through the entire first part of the day pain free, the first time in a long time. The doctor asked me to take prednizone for another week and then get a hold of them in two weeks. If in the two weeks we aren't better they would like to skip PT (per my request) and get an MRI.

I'm not sure what I will do. I'm not going to make any concrete decisions until the time comes. If next week I'm doing somersaults then awesome. If not, I'll evaluate it at that point in time.

Hope all is well Matt.

Update:

Up and down with my leg and back. Woke up today and felt good for a few hours and then went down for a few hours. Now I feel okay. Don't really konw what else to say just because it's kind of random.

But here is something exciting... I found a new gym! This gym doesn't call themselves a gym so when you google them they don't pop up. But I found them and this is what they offer:

A full indoor football/soccer field.

Weight room with two squat racks, two platforms, dumbbells, all the basics and a really nice GHR. The gym is great. There is NOTHING that is useless. Couple of racks, bench, some dumbbells and then some places to do pull ups and hook up a pulley and then a pulldown station. Nothing fancy at all.

They also have a 100 yard dash track where you can use all of their sleds.

The absolute best part of this place is no one was there today. I went at a really busy time.. 6:00 PM and there were 4 people in the weight room. 4. I asked some guy if this was normal and he said "no this is actually the busiest I've seen it. Usually it's just me and that guy on the treadmill." I asked the guy at the front and he said because their location is crap no one goes there. And the 2nd best part is it's only $25 a month. Can't wait to join.

Billings sports plex. Its some sort of place for athletes. And there is no contract and only a $5 initiation fee (for a Id card). I really can't believe how awesome this place is. Ill get some pics to you when I end up signing up.

Btw do you think the glr would help my back? Like just go and do a few sets every other day?

I think static holds and core work is the way to go until you have gone at least a week pain free... but you could do those holds off a GHR and it would be a good way to test the waters so to speak.

So I think I'm over the hump.

Cassio is in town and we are both kind of hurt but we were both itching to get on the soccer field. I found a nice indoor place and we went there with the intent of just juggling the ball and passing. I couldn't resist though and I had to take a few shots with my right leg and run around. I ended up shooting a lot and running at about 90% speed.

Now it's the next morning and I feel fine. My leg still has some lingering pain in it but it's always there. But it didn't stop me from doing anything. There wasn't a moment yesterday where I felt restricted and no movement made it hurt. I have to fly to Minnesota for a funeral this weekend so it'll be interesting to see if I still feel good in two days.

That's awesome that you and Cas were able to meet up, and even better news about the leg & back!! I think it was pretty ballsy to go and bust out the soccer ball but hopefully you are through the worst of it. Sorry to hear about the funeral, I've got one to go to as well. Best of luck!

I had to do something to test it. I didn't plan on really playing but I got caught up in the moment and it felt good.

It's been a few days and truthfully my leg feels fine. It would get stiff after the plane rides but today and especially Friday I didn't really feel anything. I spent a lot of time playing around in the pool at the hotel and my leg handled it fine. I can feel that it's somewhat... weak? Not pain, but just weak. But it's very slight and for hte most part I feel completely normal.

Not sure whta to do now.... should I start going to the gym and just doing upper body stuff to see how my back reacts? Not really sure where to go from here.

Hope you're doing okay man. Take care.

I would start doing two days a week, bench and overhead. At the end of those workouts do bodyweight versions of the squat and deadlift, bodyweight exercises like lunges along with stretching. Give that two weeks and if all is well then start working with the bar and take another two weeks to start a cycle of 531 using a super low max, and go as long as you can until you hit a plateau! :sorcerer: I am very hopeful that things are back to normal, keep me posted on here and call/text whenever!!!

Well the pain is back.

It's not bad, but it is back. It's the same as it was last week. It's not stopping me from living but it is hurting, the same pain. Felt totally fine for days and come back. Not sure what to do now. The doctor said the next step is an MRI but I'm really lacking money right now. Even with financial assitance (which I officially have) I still have no idea of how much I'd have to pay. But then again the hospital will put me on a interest free 12 month payment plan... I don't know. Have no idea what to do.

What percent do they want you to pay, or better put how much are they going to help you with? An mri could give answers, but I understand how shitty it is to have another monthly payment. Does it feel like the pain could subside again on its own like last time?

So on Thursday I got an xray and it showed nothing weird so this week I'm getting an MRI. The pain has grown a lot and today was one of the worst days. I have no idea why the pain comes and goes but hopefully on Friday we will have answers (does it take a bit for MRI results to come back?) Either way Matt i'll give you a call this weekend.

This really couldn't come at a worse time. On Saturday is our biggest fundraiser of a year and I have to handle a 50 lb, 10 foot snake by myself as well as a very active Lynx. Should be fun with one leg.

I am at a loss for a way to explain your pain level changing like that. My MRI took about 5 days to get results, but I had to be very persistent to get them. Also try to request a copy of the reading otherwise they will just tell you what the results were and you won't be able to analyze anything yourself. Good luck with the fundraiser, how do you think you will handle those animals?

Shoot me a call this weekend and we will talk!

update

Really I have no update. I'm currently on a nerve blocker which isn't working. I have to see a spine specialist in early May but that is only if they get all my medical records and a certain hospital in Oregon are not cooperating well (in all fairness though, that specific hospital did studies on my back so I'm guessing the amount of records they have is insane).

I think all the limping is doing a real number on my body. I'm currently wrapping both knees and my right calf before work (as well as wearing my ankle brace). My body has also become accustomed to Vicodin and it has no effect on me.

I haven't been able to really do anything since January. The last time I was without physical activity was in 1999 when I broke my leg. I'm about to lose it. On my days off sometimes I just go to the mall to walk, but then I have to sit down after a few minutes. I honestly feel like an old man who is on his last legs (no pun intended).

Keep on keeping on man. I would highly encourage you to find something to train, even if is is just biceps, grip or beach muscle things. This will get some of that pent up energy and stress out, I promise. We are on a grip website after all, and you would have something to progress on that will carry over when you become healthy again. We will talk soon man!
