ChrisJames Posted August 24, 2002 Share Posted August 24, 2002 Joe, i talked with Mr Assirati on numerous occasions the last being about 3 years ago.He trained with Goerner and Pullum in the Camberwell gym.He told me that Herman and his wife Elsa used to travel there by bus,being so broad that he took up 2 seats !! Alway's starting the workout with swings he,d sometimes work up to 220 plus pounds. I believe Mr Assirati was there when Goerner done the big one hand deadlift for the millionaire Getty.Mr Assirati told me that Goerner weighed about 245lbs at that time.I think the time was around 1927. Roark Posted August 24, 2002 Share Posted August 24, 2002 Goerner's big deadlifts were ascribed to 1920, his final year as an amateur lifter, so 1927 puzzles me. But, I'll do some more checking. Any more details? When Getty wrote of meeting Hermann (Ironman Mar 1974) he mentioned 1927 and he mentioned a right hand deadlift of 602.25 lbs, then 652 lbs but though the lift was easy the bar being off balance tore Goerner's skin so he stopped further attempts that night.
