David Horne
Peter Horne Memorial Grip Strength Day 2006 Saturday April 8th, 2006. Venue Stafford Start 10.30 am Events British Novice Grip Champs British Pinch Lift Champs British Hub Lifting Champs British Nail Bending Champs II and an attempt at the Rolling Thunder World Record. British Novice Grip Champs rules 1 Two Hands Pinch Lift 2. One Hand Vertical Bar Lift 3. One Hand Deadlift with Olympic Bar (no hook grip). 4. Grippers 5. Total Wrist Tester 1. Two Hands Pinch Lift The width of the pinch apparatus is adjustable to suit different hand sizes. Before the event starts, you will be given the opportunity to try it and find your best width. The smooth-sided, adjustable-width disc is held on a 2” thick metal rod by a pair of collars. Extra weights will be added to the outsides. The top of this is grasped with an overhand pinch grip and lifted until the end of the bar touches an horizontal stick placed at 16.5” from the floor. There is no referee’s signal. You do not have to be erect upon completion. You must lower the weight under control. If the outer discs accidentally touch the stick before the bar itself, referee’s discretion will be used to judge whether the correct height was attained. Pinch gripping the discs using an unorthodox underhand grip will not be allowed. A rising bar will be used on this event. The coefficient for the Two Handed Pinch Lift is 1.082. 2. One Hand Vertical bar Lift The weight will be positioned between the lifter’s feet. The lifting hand must be no further than 5 cm from the top of the hand to the top of the bar when the lift commences. No locking of the thumb is allowed. The lifter will raise the bar until it is a minimum of 5 centimetres off the ground and then lower down again without loosing the grip. The lifting hand must not touch the legs or body. A rising bar will be used on this event. The coefficient for the One Handed Vertical Bar Lift [One hand only] is 0.6618. 3. One Hand Deadlift using an Olympic Bar (No hook grip). The bar may either be raised in front of the lifter, or the lifter may straddle the bar. Hook gripping is not permitted. The free hand may be used to brace against the opposing leg. Foot spacing is optional, but may not change once the lift begins. Heels and toes may rise. The bar must be raised to a point where both ends of the bar are pulled to a height of mid knees or above and the legs must be straightened. The shoulders do not have to be pulled erect, nor the body straight as long as the legs are straight and the bar motionless with both ends above the knee joint. The lift ends with the referee's signal, and then you must lower the weight under control. A rising bar will be used on this event. The coefficient for the One Handed Deadlift [One hand only] is 0.8. 4. One Hand Grippers Competitors will set the gripper down to a 20mm gauge that is provided to measure the gap before the close. You will hold and apply the gauge yourself. Once the gripper is set, the other hand must be kept away from the gripping hand, arm and gripper. The grippers are the only event that does not operate on the rising bar principle. If you fail to close a gripper, you can attempt a lighter one on the next attempt. Competitors will be called in the order they appear on the recorder's sheet. Each time they are called, they will make one attempt with each hand. The coefficient for the One Hand Gripper with block [One hand only] is 30.5 5. Total Wrist Tester For both the front and rear part of the event both handles will be grabbed and the apparatus is lifted till the legs are straight; bending at the waist is allowed. The weights must be placed on the tray across the line drawn to start. If the weights fall off at anytime during the lift, this is a cause for failure. The lift is performed to the front first, and then lowered under control to the box. Weight can be added or taken away for the second part of the lift which is performed with the apparatus at the rear. The same rules apply to this part as well. The successful weight of both the front lever and rear lever is added together for your poundage score. A rising bar will be used on this event. The coefficient for the Total Wrist Tester is 4.0. On the one handed events (One Hand Vertical Bar Lift, One Hand Deadlift with Olympic Bar, Grippers), we will only test one hand. Four attempts will be allowed on each event. For all events, no wrist straps, gloves, wrapping or taping of any kind will be allowed on any event. British Pinch Lift Champs 1. Two Hands Pinch Lift 2. Two Hands Pinch Lift with Tyre 3. Two Hands Pinch Lift on 12mm thick disc 1. 2. Two Hands Pinch Lift of weighted tyre Extra weights will be added to the outsides of the car tyre. This tyre is 5” wide at the top. The top of the tyre is grasped with an overhand pinch grip and lifted until the end of the loading bar touches an horizontal stick placed at 16.5” from the floor. 3. Two Hands Pinch Lift on 12mm thick disc The smooth-sided discs are held on a 2” thick metal rod by a pair of collars. Extra weights will be added to the outsides. The top of this is grasped with an overhand pinch grip and lifted until the end of the loading bar touches a horizontal stick placed at 16.5” from the floor. Four attempts will be allowed on each event. The top lift on each of the 3 events will be added together for an overall total. For all events, no wrist straps, gloves, wrapping or taping of any kind will be allowed on any event. British Hub Lifting Champs 1 One Hand Hub Lift with 45lb disc and extra weight 2. One Hand Triple Hub Lift 1 One Hand Hub Lift with 45lb disc and extra weight A Ben Standard Barbell 45lb disc will be used. The lifter will straddle the disc, and grasping the hub with finger tips will lift the disc and extra weight to a height of mid knees or above. The lift ends with the referee's signal, and then you must lower the disc under control. If the weights fall off at anytime during the lift, this is a cause for failure. A rising bar will be used on this event. 2. One Hand Triple Hub Lift A Triple Hub (from Stan Pike) will be used, and only the top hub used. The lifter will straddle the apparatus, and grasping the top hub with finger tips will lift the Triple Hub to a height of mid knees or above. The lift ends with the referee's signal, and then you must lower it under control. A rising bar will be used on this event. Four attempts will be allowed on each event. The top lift on each of the 2 events will be added together for an overall total. Only one hand will be tested. For all events, no wrist straps, gloves, wrapping or taping of any kind will be allowed on any event. British Nail Bending Champs II Events and rules to follow soon. Mikael Siversson
Yes good luck everyone. I will arrange with a special top 50 list for vbar only and pinch only contests, like they do for benchpress only competitions in IPF powerlifting. It is obviously easier to get stronger in a single event if you don't have to, at the same time, get stronger in four additional events. I do, however, think that it is a great idea with these special one event only competitions as I suspect that we will see the heaviest lifts done in these. Who will arrange a vbar only competition with different diameters offered? I could ask Arne to make other diameter versions of the LGC vbar if there is interest.
