European Grip Champs 2004 Results

David Horne

Recommended Posts

Here are the results. I have double-checked all of the calculations on an Excel spreadsheet. Where both hands were tested separately, the first number is the right hand, the second the left hand, the third the combined total and the fourth the score with the points formula. Where it was a two hand event, the first number is the best lift, and the second is the score with points formula.

Hi Martin, for a 19 year old you're a giant. Get Benny and Kalle to guide you and you have a great chance at becoming a true world class strongman - the boy is a muscle monster and a nice guy to boot!

From what I understand he also only trains his grip occasionally. Imagine what he could do if he focused on grip :yikes

I'm still a little tired - travelling plus competing equals knackered so forgive my grammer for the time being.

Firstly a big thank you to Arne for the great set-up. He had a kitchenette set aside just for competitors with Peak Body protein drinks and 'Kaffiene Kick' (120mg caffiene) with enough for 2 bottles each. There were showers also available. At the entrance there was a table selling goodies and again the 12 athletes could get Peak Body's mega pro protein bars (50g protein) and Peak Body's Rocket Fuet (200mg caffiene) jsut by having a tick against their names. The equipment we used, barring the challenge bars, was all provided by Arne and included Eleikio calibrated weights. He even had to put up with 11 calls from Mikael as we lifted and he judged and did so without a hitch ('Mikael, I cannot talk right now I am judging').

However, in fairness to Mikael, it shows the passion he has when he calls a mobil phone from Australia in what would have been in the middle of the night for him to see what was happening and even argue the point re the rising bar. But we were truly tired and as per his own suggestion hopefully having either 1) the same width set ups people go in order - narrow to wide or 2) having more than one set up (as per DH/Arne's suggestions) will speed things up. Thanks to Mikael and David for their chats and thoughts which allowed things to go ahead. I know also that Arne lost about 1000 SEK or about £700 or $1300-1400 on the comp.

As for the athletes - what a bunch of guys and gals!! I think so many of us lifted beyond what we have done before. So many PB's - my only lift which I didn't set a PB on was the 2-hand pinch. Dean Bolt said to me at one point - 'Steve, to lose to this lot - with so many No: CoC 3 closers - is no shame at all'.

I must also include special thanks to Johan and David 'The Swiss' Hurzeler. Firstly David and I had egged each other on here on the board and had a tacit agreement to match each other on the c/bars. This helped me enormously and added to the 35 or so kilos ahead I needed to be to take 3rd place ahead of Johan meant I bent a bar I had never even kinked or for that matter tried before. Even though I didn't managed the place it helped me bend like never before. Jim 'Smitty' Smith's tip of wrapping an ice cold towel around my arm between bars also helped keep the grinding pain away and enabled me to bend like a beast!!

'The Swiss' was an insperation to all of us with some 3 times + bodyweight lifts esp on the one hand stuff. He was the lightest competitor there and weighed a full 100 kilos less than Eric who was the heaviest at 175 kilos plus.

I was also in awe of Florian who I had read nothing about and knew even less and yet pissed the grippers like they were nothing.

Even without the competition itself meeting a diverse group from all over Europe some travelling (in my case) 1600 + round trip miles and being able to clink beers with fellow enthusiasts was awesome and I was happy to cheer on big efforts even if it meant they lifted more than me.

A final word of thanks to my good friend Mike 'Mikejag' Smith and his partner Monica who both travelled with me to support me. Mike, who suffers from a variety of medical complaints, pushed me back onto the platform when I was walking off after trying a 280 kilo bar and was very ill the next day (food poisoning). So much so that he had to be wheeled off the plane at Heathrow. Cheers Mike.

Interesting to compare the age of the competitors with the overall results.

No. 1-4: average age 37

No. 5-8: average age 27

No. 9-12:average age 27

the battle for first place was incredible.

Benny is immensely strong, DH was an inspiration for concentration, focus, and rage (and grip of course, but everyone knows that!)

I am really tired today, even worse than sunday!
