A New Approach To The Rolling Thunder

Have you noticed any mass gains from the GVT work with your hands? I am buying an RT and thinking about trying GVT as well. If you don't mind. I am interested if the results will be similar with others.

Well, after a workout the forearms are really really big and I have problems closing a Trainer. My forearms have grown a bit after starting GVT, of course only at their front side where the flexors are.

To be honest if your main goal is to gain mass, I would do other exercises for both the extensors and the flexors.

However, if you want to get better with the RT then you may try doing GVT with it and accept the mass gain as a nice side effect.

One more question, I just watched your MM0 cert again, do you feel the Rolling Thunder GVT has helped or hindered your Crushing?

Thanks

Interesting results with the GVT. I've noticed too when doing high volume that taking a break like you did can have pretty adverse results. I'm sure you'll be back at it and closing in on 100kg in no time.

Thanks for the motivation. :happy

Oops, nearly misses that one, sorry! :blush

I guess the Rolling Thunder is slowing my progress in the crushing power.

That's the reason I was taking a break from the RT-training 2 weeks before my both gripper certs.

But when you train both you for sure will improve yourself in both disciplines and thats what I want to.

If your focus is on maximul crushing power in the shortest time, then any thick bar training might interfere the gripper training.

Day 11

Well, I'm back! :cool

9 days after my last disappointing workout I did a new attempt with very

satisfying results:

Entry-Tests

Left: 72,5 kg (160 lbs)

Right: 77,5 kg (171lbs)

This equals my PR with my left and is only 1,25kg under the PB of my right.

GVT-Sets

Left: 10,10,10,10,10,10,10,7,6,6 w/ 47,5 kg (105 lbs)

Right : 10,10,10,10,10,10,9,10,6,7 w/ 50 kg (110lbs)

Here the updated graph for the 1RM entry tests.

Day 12

Damned, I got a bit lazy lately. Actually I wanted to train twice a tweek with the RT. Last training was 1 week ago ...

Entry-Tests

Left: 72,5kg (160 lbs)

Right : 77,5 kg (171 lbs)

Not too bad: At or close to my PBs. However I'm a bit disappointed since the great results of the first workouts seems to stall.

GVT-Sets

Left: 10,10,10,10,10,7,7,6,8,5 w/ 47,5 kg

Day 13

What a happy day! :D

Entry Tests

Left: 73,75 kg (162,5 lbs) PR :happy

Right: 80 kg (176lbs) PR :yikes

Two PRs in a single workout, wow thats nice.

However, I had really to fight for the 80 on the right. I missed my first attempt, lifted 78,75 that easy that I tried the 80s again and missed it again. I did a little pause and finally I lifted it.

GVT-Sets

Those went quite fine too:

Left : 9x10,5 w/ 47,25 kg (105 lbs)

Right : 8x10,7,8 w/ 50 kg (110 lbs)

Actually I wanted to use the basic GVT-routine only 6 weeks and continue then with an advanced version using fewer reps and higher weights. Since I have still some gains using the basic version there is no reason to modify it now. Another point is that I didn't train continuously due to my certification preparation.

Day 14

Today I built some Pinch Grip blocks according to Rick Walkers great article posted in the new forum. :bow

Of course I couldn't resist to play with them. :happy

Afterwards I startet my GVT-workout with the RT:

Entry Tests

Left: 75kg (165lbs) PR

Right: 81,25kg (179lbs) PR

This starts to scare me. Those weights are feeling incredible heavy for me. However they are getting some air and slowly they are coming up. Don't know why. :tongue

GVT-Sets

Hmm, since my inner thumb side felt really sore due to the pinching I did before my workout, I had quite to fight through the sets.

Left:10,10,10,10,10,10,8,8,8,9 w/ 47,5kg

Right:10x10 w/ 50kg

Therefore I will use 52,5 kg (~116lbs) for the next workout with my right hand.

Here the updated graph for the 1RM entry tests.

Thanks guys.

I'll give my best. I guess that bodyweight will be a really tough weight for me to lift with the RT. (~88kg currently)

This program seems to work fine if it's done twice a week. I had a phase after my pause (pause was between workouts 9 and 10) when I trained only once a week and I had no further gains.

As mentioned earlier I want to test the advanced GVT version too. I will start the GVT when a progress is no longer visible.

  • 8 months later...

i was reading this through, really interesting. I'll have a go at that GVT program of yours. I am at the same weight when you started out.

Why did you stop posting about your progress, how is it going heute>?

Yes, to bad that I didn't continue that program.

I just wanted to focus on other things and never came back to the RT.

I will go back to the RT since its one event at the german grip championship and last year the RT was the worst of 5 events. I got second overall but only 7th in the RT. :trout

Currently I'm making great progress in the bending, gripper and pinch department and I don't wont to slow down that progress by including another event.

What I did love at that program was that you feel the muscles which are involved in the lift. Something I didn't observe using max attempts.

With the 7 or 8th set the forearms were that pumped up that it hurt and it was challenging to just let pass the 90 secs rest.

Took the liberty to post my GVT Rolling Thunder training in this log :blush

Started yesterday with the GVT...

Right and left with the same weights as Franky

RH 45kg

LH 37,5

I ended my last set with 5 reps for RH and Lh with 1 rep.

This is really something else, WOW. My forearms are fried. Next day, i couldn't even properly squeeze a gripper! I think good things will happen with this program. Hopefully i can reach my goal of 80kg with RH and 70kg with LH.

GVT training:

I didn't do a 1RM test, i just started out with the same weights, 37,5 and 42kg.

I did the workout as followed, i did my set for lefthand, changed weight and did my RH set, and took a breather and started again left. The first time i completed all 10 sets for one hand, before starting the other.

I managed to get all 10 sets for 10 reps, both hands. So that is a LOT better than last time...

Monday or Tuesday will do it again. First a 1RM test. Should i base my workout numbers on the 1RM test, or should i add 5% on to the 37,5 adn 42??

This doesn't really go hand in hand with my KTA training, but we'll see..

Haha,

RT with that volume interferes like hell with KTA.

Always apply the 5% to the last used weight.

Link to comment

thanks, i'll add 5%... maybe when KTA gets more intense, with the 90 singles, i'll put the RT on hold....
