Bill Piche
John Brookfield's Mastery of Hand Strength and Ironmind seem to be in agreement that the three major types of grip strength are: Crush Pinch Supporting A different way to look at this classification, is to look at which muscles are used when you use the grip: You can have with or without thumb involvement. The 4 fingers have two flexors each; one flexing all joints and one flexing the two innermost joints. You can actually cramp the second and first joints of the finger, while still having the outermost joint loose. In addition to these main types of grip, there are some minor types that are associated with 'grip': Finger extension Sideways movement of the fingers (like in the axe walk). Each finger has a muscle on either side of it, providing sideways movement. Wrist flexion and extension Wrist pronation and wrist supination etc. For a good list of the remaining details of the hand, start your exploration at eHand
