How To Do This Extensor Exercise

I'm starting to do some finger extensions with a thick rubber band. Basically I position the band around my fingers and thumb and then I extend. I'm confused as to how far I should actually extend the fingers. I find that when I try to TOTALLY staighten the fingers, the rubber band flips up to my wrist. Am I supposed to extend the fingers all the way like that so they are straight, or can I keep the first couple of knuckles bent so that the rubber band will stay in place?
