why? Just curious

I was going to weld the handles on the bottom, flat side to keep the whole thing more like a globe dumbell. And I was thinking of keeping all the rubber on it, so it kinda protects it from when it hits the floor .

Use a floor mat when you grip man :D

The db will be more useful if it's rounded on the insides like a real inch is. It you tilt it when you lift it's not going to work for you. Tilting when you train with thick bar db's is a very essential way of training.

This is as far as I could get today. I hate when work gets in the way of having fun.

Yes, I’m hoping to get about 145 to 150. Although I think this might be a little more than I can handle right now, but definitely something to work into.

Just an update on this project. Waiting for time to get some shielding Gas For the welder. so I can finish, but it still sits here on the workbench I have not forgotten about it . The other project I’ve been working on, is cutting this round monster in the pinch blocks. If all goes well, I should start on it Monday or Tuesday.

The first two pinch blocks are doable. The third one probably with time the fourth one at 71 pounds not impossible, but not today.

Back to the original post of my version of the inch dumbbell.
A friend of mine who’s a gym rat and also happens to be a welder, says hey when you gonna finish that thing, I said, I’m waiting to get some gas for my welder so I can do it, he says let me fire up the arc machine and will weld it right now.

Again...those pinch blocks are awesome, John!  What was the width of the fourth one at 71 pounds?

That’s beautiful. Great craftsmanship John. On the inch and pinch blocks.

A little bit of trouble welding the handle onto the cast-iron kettle bells. The welds cool down too fast and they want to crack so we’re hoping by letting it cool down really slow it might be OK but it will be kind of brittle.

Yeah, i know cast is very high in carbon and can break pretty easy and extremely hard to weld.

I know in blacksmithing, ive heard of smiths keeping it in sand to slow down the cooling process. I may have done that in school when i made  knife.
