slazbob
Does anyone ice their hands on a regular basis after training? I’ve never done it for a long time…just spurts. I’ve been wondering if it’s something we should always do after heavy training- even though I’ve read somewhere that you don’t want to halt the body from the inflammation process. Any input is welcome.
Climber028
I would never use ice for acute soreness post workout, due to the cooling blunting the inflammatory signal necessary for growth and repair to occur. The only time an ice bath is optimal is an elite athlete working out 2 or more times a day, ice bath after the first session allows you to perform for the next sessions, just can't end the day with ice. For general joint pain such as sore hands from grip I much prefer either contrast baths, hot to cold back and forth but always starting and ending with hot or extremely light high rep movements. By light I don't mean an easy gripper but something as easy as a stress ball or similar. I also use very light resistence bands for that, not the loop bands commonly used in lifting but the super light ribbon style used in physical therapy. Movement is key for blood flow, and there is no healing without blood.
slazbob
Thanks! I thought the same thing. We need that inflammatory response for healing. Maybe if working around an injury…I had therapy for my knee years ago and they always iced after the work.
