opnsysme
Since I realize being new you may not understand the search feature of this board, I took it apon myself to write a simple 1 page word doc with some basic definitions and websites. If you want to reply or more preferably email me with an email address (that can accept attachments) I will send you what I have. P.S For the veterns if you want a copy to offer constructive critism let me know. I do not claim to be the authority and welcome your psotive feedback on ways of improvement. BarBender
Let's change the ISG Calculator page to this one: http://www.angelfire.com/ar/mathgod/sg/ For some reason web1000 accounts have been locked down for a few weeks. No uploads are allowed by FTP. The last time I sent an e-mail to the admin, it bounced due to exceeding his allocated quota. A new version of the three-spring calculator was uploaded a few days ago and I now have an FAQ that should answer most questions. The screen shot has also been updated. There are two-spring JavaScript versions of the calculator but those are not as nifty as the downloadable three-spring calculator.
opnsysme
Cool I will change my records. BTW BarBender are you a math wiz?
BarBender
BarBender are you a math wiz? yep. Since I am in Arkansas, claiming to be a mathematics genius is like riding the short bus to school and bragging that you made all As on your report card. In all seriousness I haven't displayed any significant talent that would warrant recognition. The algorithm for the three-spring calculator is pretty straight forward. Knowing how the springs fit on the gripper and given the 12 tensions, writing the code was more of a programming exercise. The fun begins when trying to synchronize the various components to respond to user interaction. The JavaScript version has been around since 2000 (I think). The code should be easy to follow. opnsysme
Don't down play your ability, though I'm a self proclaimed computer geek its mostly hardware. I've tried programming and I suck. The reason I ask is, I was wondering if you could do a simple graph or chart based on wire thickness equally an amount of pounds to close. I.E .195 =200lbs to close and so on up to the highest thickness? thanks
BarBender
For some reason I think that such a chart has been done before. There is at least one table listing various properties of 40 torsion grippers offered by Richard Sorin for testing by PDA. Other board members have offered their gripper information in various postings. Such a chart would be fairly easy to do in Excel. The results would not be a single value but a range of values for the respective wire thickness. The chart may help in determining if a gripper is within range or tolerance. If you are asking for a torsion spring gripper equivalent of the super gripper calculators, there is a JavaScript calculator discovered by Tom Black that estimates the closing force for compression springs. I have lost the URL. Tom may post it if he reads this thread. I remember that it was free and hosted by an engineering company.
Tom Black
Torsion Spring Calculator: http://www.engineersedge.com/spring_torsion_calc.htm You may need to turn off your pop-up blocker (Google's blocker blocked the calculator). John Wood
I would also advise every newbie to introduce themselves with a REAL NAME.
opnsysme
Also John they could just update their profile and you could read the info there.
John Wood
Its not about me reading that info elsewhere. Its about introducing yourself like a real man. Personally, its easier for me (and Im sure everyone else) to talk to someone with a real name rather than a pseudonym.

opnsysme
John I see your point and can agree to a point, but I would be the fool if I were to call Wannagrip, Bearcat75 and Sybersnot not "real men" Just because they use a pseudoym, not there real name. Do you agree or at least see where I'm coming from? P.S My name,if you don't want to read my personal is Matt Chips. John Wood
Matt, Those guys have been around since the beginning so I dont include them as such. Everyone knows who they are and what they stand for. I dont care if someone wants to post under a pseudonym but as a point of respect for themselves and everyone here, they should at least provide a real name somewhere in the post especially a newbie. Now, do you see where I'm coming from? In other news, Jeremy, welcome to the board.
