Jared Goguen Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 After a fair amount of correspondence with JaredWith1R. We are going to have a little race to see who can bend the Red Nail first in IMP's since we are both relatively new to bending it should be fun. 2 Quote My YouTube channel - grip, and shop projects.

Alawadhi Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Love this thread it brought me memories. Chez started it few years back and I was the first to cert But it isn't fair since long time back I was bending heavy and stopped due to my accident and laziness then muscle memory hit back fast and got certed soon. 1 Quote Read about me in my biography. JaredWith1R Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 I know this is a contest, but I'm looking for a little advice on my training plan. I'm ordering more stock to start on 7" bends. I wanted to get some opinions before I make this order. My current PR is a 6" G, which is rated around 340#. This is what I'm looking to get, all for 7" stock. 3ft I, 335# 3ft J, 340# (current PR weight) 6ft L, 370# 6ft N, 405# (this rating is a little suspect, since its so close to M. It is only 7mill difference, but I'm still suspicious) 3ft 5/16" DR, 440# I've already got a fair amount of A and D in 6" for warmups. Would it be better to warmup on 7" for the 7" challenge bends? I don't have as much money as I would like to throw at equipment, so I am trying to save wherever I can. And once I get close, I'll order some actual red nails. Does this look like a good set of nails to train with? I tried to get extra of the nails between my current PR and my goal. Pretty big jumps between letters, though. 30-35# each. Thanks to everyone for the help and support. Jose Cabrera Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 Those ratings are a general guide brother, test em out as you go along, a general warmup is best, then one easy bend to get the juices flowin, thats what ive always done. Hope it helps Quote
JoshW Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 I rarely ever bend DO but just bent a 128.75kg crs 6" to about 3-3.5" after a long volume workout! Not too bad for a reverse bender Good luck everyone hope you all reach the red soon. Hope it helps Yeah I know that the ratings aren't exactly gospel, but it's very nice for gauging where I'm at. In an ideal world, I would be able to rate everything myself beforehand. What I'm doing right now is 3/16" and A as a warm up, then D as my working range and G is my challenge (all 6" right now). I also will only do grip training stuff after a day of climbing or hangboarding and pushups to get my whole body warm up. This seems to be a sufficient way for me to work, all my bends have felt pretty good. Just gonna keep on chugging along in this manner, then. Thanks for the advice, as usual! 2 Quote YouTube, WeightxRepsCurrent Stats6'1" 167lbs (goal 74kg)Left Hand: 7.5" long, 9" spanRight Hand: 7.5" long, 8.25" span!Gripper (40mm block set)CoC #2.5 RGC 126 (RH)CoC #2 RGC 105 (LH)Bending (DO IMPs)PR: I x 7"Goal: Red Nail!!! JHenze646 Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 3ft I, 335# 3ft J, 340# (current PR weight) 6ft L, 370# 6ft N, 405# (this rating is a little suspect, since its so close to M. It is only 7mill difference, but I'm still suspicious) 3ft 5/16" DR, 440# I am not a good bender by any stretch, but I set out a similar way. I ordered H-N 6 ft of most & 9 ft of M & N. Progress however doesn't work that way and I would have been better with lots of H & J. I should have bought the rest later. And for me, length of the bar makes a difference. All the best to you both. So that can help and hurt. Buy a few sticks of "H" and "I". Like I said in other threads you CANNOT compare 6" stuff to 7" stuff. Here is a good example, I took a piece of 6" Q bar rated at 765 to 2.25 inches and couldn't finish. Q at 7" is 590 and I plow through that with no issues. Plus you need to build up a good base. Toughen the skin and tendons. There were a few climbers that thought the way you do and failed the red cert first time around. Save your money and do volume work with H and I. If you choose to listen you will be successful. If not your wasting money and you'll find out the hard way. Mike Sharkey Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 Trust me this is a tortoise race. You absolutely can't push it. Train and stay healthy. Your body will need more recovery than you can imagine. I got sick every time I bent for the first few months. If ya'll are ready to cert this time in 2015 I would consider that pretty quick. There were a few climbers that thought the way you do and failed the red cert first time around Specifically, he's talking about Daniel Reinard. Top notch climber and grip phenom. Failed the cert his first time. Spent a year doing strongman and PL, put on 20+ pounds of muscle and did a double cert with the #3. His Red took like 8 seconds. 1 Quote

I changed my order over to lots of G, H and I, all for 7" training. I certainly intend to listen, the last thing I need is an injury. I did some more 6" work today (videos to be posted soon), and the G took a bit of effort and a few set adjustments. I gave an 'I' a good solid try, but it didn't workout this time. Gonna take a bit of work. Thanks for all of the advice. I'm sure it will get me where I'm trying to go. 1 Quote YouTube, WeightxRepsCurrent Stats6'1" 167lbs (goal 74kg)Left Hand: 7.5" long, 9" spanRight Hand: 7.5" long, 8.25" span!Gripper (40mm block set)CoC #2.5 RGC 126 (RH)CoC #2 RGC 105 (LH)Bending (DO IMPs)PR: I x 7"Goal: Red Nail!!! Mike Sharkey Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 Some ppl can push it. Depends on your background before bending. If you believe you can achieve. Sounds cliche but there is truth to it. I gave you different advice because you already had a 500# DL and a 300# bench press. Different background preparation. I believe any man can train and successfully cert the Red Nail. Takes some 3 months, took me 3 years. Regardless I think its a really worthy goal. The availability of information about technique and steel progression (a really overlooked matter - when I started all that was talked about was a grade 8 bolt being a step from the Red, which it most certainly is not - imagine trying to go from a 200# bench to a 300# one and you didn't have any 10's or 5's and that was the situation before the understanding and rating of 0-1 DR) from people like EJ has cut down the time someone with a solid PL background can reach the goal. For those of us that need to develop the strength along the way, patience and careful training is key. Quote
king crusher Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 Yes I agree. But of a guy doesn't have a super strong base he probably won't be able to apply enough force to get hurt. So it will come naturally anyway. Listening to your body is a good plan. Quote
