Start pinching right away. Just sandwich plates together with the smooth sides out and lift. Reset and repeat. Any plates are fine. 3x10s. 2x25s. Whatever you can manage. Also a good poor-man's thickbar is to load up one end of a regular 45# Olympic bar. Grab on to what's left of the end you loaded and lift.
