pwrlftr50
squat bench deadlift press snatch clean and jerk I know, that's six lifts. These are the basics I do and not much else other than chins. If I had to narrow it down to 5 I'd ditch the bench and push my presses like mad. Jason
The Natural
Squat Bench DL Strict overhead Power clean On a related note, if I could pick five lifts ("supplemented powerlifting") to determine a person's brute strength, these would be it. blob
I think bent rows belong on the list as well.

Looking over my list, it's a shame there isn't an official sport that consists of these. I think it would end all debate about which sport best tests strength, were it to exist. It's not unfeasible either, as strongman has 5 events in a day without any problems. Or heck, make it a two day event. But yeah, that would be a "put up or shut up" sport. tselegala
I think unbraced or braced bending, although not a lift per say, is one of the most intense strength building exercises of all time. Not just gym strong but real life strong. Grab an arm and break it strong. The type of strength you can never get in a gym. The type of strength that you just don't see coming. I admire the heck out of anybody who can bend steel like some of the top benders, but you need to try it first to find out why i say this. Martin Gaisser
If your interested in a program try the 5,3,1 Boring But Big. I've got some awsome gains using this program. My brother trained with a guy last summer doing the same program and he's a 220lb 960lb squatter. I almost forgot its based around squat, deadlift, bench and military press. anson
Not many people do them, but good mornings are great strength builders. I'd be willing to bet that almost all top level strongmen & powerlifters do good mornings.
