How To Tear A Phone Book

Sorry for the noob/dumb question.

I have a few old phone books. Could anybody link me to a tutorial on how to get the most out of tearing these?

And unrelated: I used the search function first, but when I typed in tearing phone books, I results of posts about ebooks and other posts that weren't really what I was looking for. Do you have suggestions on how to better use the search function so that I'm not asking questions that have probably been asked hundreds of times before?
