Joe Kinney's Grip Machine

Who was it on the grip board that said they had a Joe Kinney grip machine that

he made them?

Whoever it is, do you have a pic?

I have seen JK's grip machine he made on the video but I was curious

as to what the one looked like that he made for a GB member.

Thanks!

If you're talking about the "Secret Weapon" I have one - I'll post some photos as soon as I can.

I think Sybersnott.

Thanks Arturo!

Maybe he'll chime in.

No, not the SW.

This was a grip machine made by Joe Kinney for someone on the board.

A Secret Weapon is a grip machine made by Joe Kinney. They were different than what was in his video, in that they were "stand alone" devices, not wall-mounted. He shipped it as two pieces, you slide the post into the base, and presto you had a Secret Weapon. I think he made them in 2000-2001-2002 for people, but none since - - that's my memory at least.

I am pretty sure I have one of the last ones, and that was from 2002. Have not touched it in years. It is more a piece of memorabilia than exercise equipment for me.

Actually, you could either wall-mount it (if you wanted), OR you could use the base and work with it like that. On the back of the unit, it has holes for a wall-mount if you prefer to work with it like that. I used the base mount and got great results just working with it like that.

Hey Hub... are you looking to get rid of your SW? Just let me know, I might just buy it from ya! ;)

1. Mine does not have holes on the back.

2. The SW is gathering rust, I don't use it...but I don't want to part with it. To me, it is like selling a Willie Mays or Mickey Mantle card (I have both, Topps, 1963), emotional attachment. Plus, I am convinced it was one of the last ones he ever did, so I have this illusion it is actually worth something.

Gazza, how is the progress with the 4, have you tested yourself lately, after a few months of the 2 different grip machines, its been fairly quiet from you since you had them built

I have 3 different SW machines plus a grip machine i just do a curcuit wit them plus the blob and 2 3/4 handled DB.

I dont really bother with the grippers i might do once i feel the need.

Why would you ask such a question? I'm using mine; it's right next to me FYI... :happy

It's VERY productive, but it's not an everyday usage item.

im sure if you searched you would find out, plenty of people have used the. They are just for negs, and you have to have mental fortitude to use them.

Teemu and gazza are the most recent people, that i know, who have trained consistently with them. Check Teemus log or his blog

I have trained extensively with my SW over the past two years. I mostly used it for heavy negatives. The benefit to me with the secret weapon is that the full weight load hits your hand instantly while your hand is already closed. This is very different than trying to set a heavy gripper, mash the handles together, then trying to fight out a negative.

I'm still trying to find what works with this machine. Kinney recommends (in his video) using a weight that is just heavy enough to slowly drag your hand open. I have found benefit in using a BTR handle with heavy weight that I can actually hold shut for a short time, kind of like an overcrush. I think Teemu has experimented with doing full range closes.

It does hurt pretty bad because 100% of the weight is in your fingers. I have bruised the "meat" in my fingers pretty deeply doing heavy negatives.

Ok, i'm ignorant here. Is this similar to the IM go-ready grip machine or different?

I made my Secret Weapon and love it, I use it every week. It is a bit brutal though; it feels like my fingers are going to get torn off.

Now I have never used one, but it looks to me like it would better if it had a foot pedal you could step on to bring the handles together instead of trying to reach around to grab the bar ? Like I said , I am just looking at it through a picture.

I could not have said it better myself.

Joe told me to work with about 100 pounds and that's what I did and it still hurt. IMO, this machine is NOT a playtoy by any means; if you do something stupid and not pay attention, you will hurt yourself.

You made a great point, John, in that this device is by no means intended for anyone who isn't at least an advanced grip specialist.

Hmmmm... if i were to make one would any one change anything? ?

also if a lighter weight were to be used say at poundages of the different calabrated grippers we come up against, could you mock the umph of that same gripper? Say if you tried a pretend credit card set.

eg.... would Bob Lipinski's calabrated #152 CoC#3 give the same resistance as #152 on the secret weapon if i tried to close it with the same set??????? if not how could you alter the secret weapon to give the same-ish feel when comparing the two? what relationship is there to a #152 pound gripper? what would you have to have on the secret weapon to feel the same if you could not alter the secret weapon?

Get what i'm saying?

can i have a few different thoughts from you guys
