Training For The Im Red Nail Certification

Hello,

August last year I started bending nails with the DO technique, before that I've been doing a little reverse bending.

I just recovered from a hand injury, still feels a little odd, but I'm able to bend with it.

My goal is to be able to DO bend a Red in IM pads before 2009, right now I can barely do one in normal (thick) pads, but I'm going to try.

I live in Holland, so I don't have the same iron as most of you, but I'll try to write it all down as clear as possible.

Last night I did a Red in normal pads, took me well over 5 minutes, the crush down was hard.

Also scrolled a 1/4" nail into an 'S' shape, within a minute.

Nice. I have been aiming for the red cert as well, but got set back pretty far. Do you have a plan for gradually using thinner wraps? The closest I ever got was using thick leather on one side and an IM pad on the other...and it came out way off center with a wide bend radius :D

Nice job with the nail as well. I tried that once but couldn't figur eout how to get leverage for the second bend :(

I'm going to start bending in IM wraps, tonight I'm going to try to bend 6mm crs, and than just move up.

The nail was probably from China, since it was really weak, I just used DO style at both bends.

Good luck!

Luuc, make sure you fold the pads in 4 instead of 3 layers, I'm sure it'll help you kink that Red ;)

Yes, and it really helped;

7" 1/4" (6mm) CRS

6" 1/4" ("") CRS

5" 1/4" ("") CRS

5" 1/4" ("") stainless

6,5" 1/4" (6,5mm) CRS

6" 9/32" CRS

Pre kinked (30 degrees) 5,5" 5/16" HRS bend further to 90+ degrees.

"" ("") 5,5" 9/32" CRS; barely moved.

I'm not unhappy! I only cut the 6,5mm stuff to 6,5" because I thought I wouldn't be able to go shorter, but I think I can bend a 5,5" piece of it.

I also have to buy some more 9/32" nails (which are CRS) and 5/16" HRS

Just did 2 'sets' of:

6,5" * 1/4" CRS

6" * 1/4" CRS

5,5" * 1/4" CRS

All 6 were 6,5mm thick.

I found a piece of 5,5" * 9/32" CRS today, tried it, at first it didn't want to move, but after some sweet talking it admit it had to be bend, succes in 4 minutes.

And I took a 5,5" * 1/4" G8 from 30 degrees (pre kinked) to about 40 degrees.

Haven't been able to go to the hardware store, but I will this week.

Today:

1/4" G8

Two 1/4" * 6" CRS

1/4" * 5" stainless

All these bends took me about 30 seconds.

I'm very happy with the G8 bend!

Video's are coming. (Of the first 2 bends)

Tonight:

5/16" * 6" HRS in 30 seconds.

5,5" G8 in 4 minutes.

5/16" * 5,5" HRS in 1 minute.

The G8 was fun, just a bit harder than expected.

'Epic' night:

First some 1/4" crs and stainless.

5/16" * 5,5" HRS, in 40 seconds

5/16" * 5" HRS, in 2,5 minutes

Fail: 5" G8, to 20 degrees in 5 minutes

5/16" * 7" CRS!

5/16" * 7" CRS!! (didn't rewrap)

(Both took about 4 minutes.)

The Red didn't kink, just a tiny stroke of light when I hold it on a table.

Thanks! Good luck to you too, are you also going for a cert?

It is a long term goal I have done some Bastard cert's but with thick pad's so I have been going with smaller and smaller pad's I did a Red Nail yesterday in 1 inch leather pad's in a 1:20 so have some work to do. I need to keep making my outer index finger's tougher with IM pad's it's a pain issue not power. I looking at another 6 month's to a year if I stay healthy I would guess. :D

Yeah, I've got a piece of skin ripped off at the side of my index finger now, it was a blister but as I was working today it tore open. Not a big piece luckily.

Take it from me let it heal completely you keep it open and it will take forever to heal and set you back !!!

Had to bend tonight, I wanted to bend a bastard, but it didn't move really.

Instead I did:

5/16" * 7" CRS in 1 minute

5/16" * 6,5" CRS in 6 minutes.

Tried another 6,5" piece, but I only got a little kink.

7" * 5/16" CRS

6,5" * 5/16" CRS

Both within 5 minutes, in IM pads and no elastic bands!

I'm really happy with these bends since last training I wasn't even able to bend any 5/16" CRS!
