Kc Qualifier

PLACE: Scott Harris's house in KC.

DATE: March 29th, a Saturday.

TIME: Haven't set a starting time yet, it's relatively flexible.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this contest is to get anyone qualified for the USGC that is interested in attending. If you are not interested in the USGC, you can come anyway and have a great time and teach us, and learn from us in a very supportive atmosphere of brotherhood.

ENTRY FEE: $10. Will cover food and drinks. There will be NO trophies. No plaques. Only bragging rights and a lot of learning.

If you're still undecided, there will be an armwrestling table there and no less than 4 experienced armwrestlers there to give some tips and maybe even pull after the contest if everyone's feeling strong.

One of the best reasons to attend will be the pre-event technique clinic that we'll be putting on, either before the contest, or before each individual event. This is a contest setting in which we all want the other guy to do very well. The best that you can possibly be. So that's why there will be demonstrations of each event with the resident "expert" in that event showing anyone who's interested how it's done. Sure there are different techniques that work for different body types and hand sizes, but we've been around long enough to know a lot of those tricks and tactics. We're here to share. And to learn. So bring yourself, a friend, and anyone who's even slightly interested in grip strength, and come on down! That being said, we won't have a lot of room for non-competitors, so please limit the amount of spectators. This is a great first time grip contest for those of you who're on the fence about competing. Don't wait until you're "strong enough" because you will most likely put it off forever. Be confident enough to enter this one and join us for a great time.

No age classes, weight classes, hand size classes, or gender classes. We're all in it together.

Events:

#1) Grippers-MMS. 4 attempts. 1 hand contested. #3 or equivalent (140#) is the minimum qualifying standard. Between all of us we have at least half a dozen #3s that range from very easy to nobody's likely to close it. There will be about 50 grippers there.

#2) 2HP. 4 attempts. Lift to a 16.5" bar. Lower under control. Not a Euro setup. 2.5" width. 170 is the minimum qualifying standard.

#3) 2" Vbar. 4 attempts. 2" minimum height standard. 1 hand contested. Probably won't be the FBBC 2" vbar, but a homemade one. 200 is the minimum qualifying standard.

#4) Reverse Bending. 4 attempts. 40 degrees or more in 30 seconds or less. 6" Grade 5 is the minimum qualifying standard.

#5) Axle DO Deadlift. Tentative for now. 4 attempts. 290 is the minimum qualifying standard.

#6) Wacky Medley. This one's going to be a lot of fun! We've borrowed and stolen from some of the other medley ideas that have been popping up lately. Haven't decided yet exactly what will be included but some of them will be pretty unique. Like a 2 finger brass knuckles deadlift to a low platform. Blobs are likely. Plate pinching of some kind. RT possibly. Maybe a lever lift.

This is copied right from the qualifying standards discussion:

For the 2008 season, an athelete performing any 3 of the following feats in competition shall be qualified for nationals. The 2008 season is exempt from the above rules:

Vertical Bar-290

2" Verticle Bar-200

Gripper-IM #3 or equivalent (140#), or 150# for choker close

Reverse Bending- Grade 5x6" bolt

Axle Deadlift-290

Plate Pinch-170

Afterwards will be a good old fashioned "hey-look-what-I-can-do" session. Don't miss out on your chance to certify on any FBBC steel or stock that you've been putting off for a rainy day. What better witnesses for the bending certs than some guys who are on the Top 20 lists?

Anyone with questions or interest in competing, PM me (or Scott Harris, or Josh Dale) or reply to this topic. We've already got 6 guys who will most likely be attending. There will be a limit of 20, so sign up ASAP. My e-mail is: misterfrosty@aol.com if you prefer that method of contact.

We look forward to seeing you guys.

I am in Ben at the very least to help, bend, Armwrestle etc. :D:D

Excellent! It'll be great to have you there Jason. I was hoping you could bring your unspeakable #3 just in case there are people out there who think they can close any #3. I've been schooled before, but your #3 is an entirely different beast.

Great start to the year in the US, now everyone needs to support this US venture.

David

Thanks David! Seems like everytime we get together there are always a group of people who say they want to train, or learn, or teach...then we never see them when it's time to meet up. Now's the time for those guys to come out of the woodwork and have a good time competing in their first grip contest.

The Heartbreaker will make the trip let me know if there is anything else I can bring.

Thanks for posting this Ben. I'm looking forward to giving the heartbreaker a squeeze.

If you live in the midwest and haven't qualified for Nationals and want to go, this is your chance. All events will be judged strictly but the whole purpose of the contest is to get people qualified. So if you can close a #3, pinch 170, reverse a G5, etc... BUT haven't done it in a contest setting, NOW is your chance to get qualified, not to mention a top 3 placing would automatically qualify you.

Yeah, SOOoooo.... I'm pretty bummed I can't make it :cry Seriously guys, it doesn't matter if you want to compete or not. You'll never be "ready", just go to the contest!!! Don't think about it as a contest, think about it as an extremely organized training session with others there to help you out. The whole point of your first contest is not to win but to LEARN!!! And the group of guys going to Scott's for the contest will be more than willing to help out in any way they can. You'll be hard pressed to find someone better at grippers than Josh Dale, or someone better than Ben Edwards at teaching you how to bend unbraced. Not to mention the various grip lifts they excel at!!! So do your best to make it out there guys and gals!!!

I'll definitely be there. To echo what everybody else has said, for those of you that are on the fence about whether or not to come, you'll never be "ready". Just show up prepared and well-rested. Though there will be some nervousness, I've gotten the least nervous over a grip contest than anything else I've ever done. A grip contest, to me, is nothing in nervousness compared to say, a football game or a wrestling match. Plus, even in all the powerlifting and strongman events I've been to, where everybody has been nothing but supportive, there's still a lot of tension. I never really feel that when I go to a grip contest.

Plus, and I don't think I speak just for myself on this one: with the type of coaching and encouragement you get at one of these contests (or even a regular training session with a bunch of fellow grip-specialists for that matter), you will definitely feed off the energy, bringing even better than your "A" game, and you'll do stuff previously thought impossible.

I can't wait for the "hey-look-what-I-can-do" session afterwards. I'd definitely like to debut my recently-acquired DC1 horseshoe bending ability around fellow "non-civilians" in the grip-world, as well as take a shot at the nasty SCF-Lite#2 or #3 shoes I have. I'll be bringing my Kerckhaerd #4 and #5 shoes (2 of each) for any mutants out there that want to try... are you absolutely SURE you can't come Zach? I might be selling myself short, but if I see one of those bent in person, I'll have no problem convincing myself that I can train to bend one, for they are mortal. First, though, I know Scott, Ben, and Josh will have to coach me on an attempt at a DO Mag.

One thing I forgot to ask, is it a "bring your own steel" sorta deal for the certification/contest attempts? I'll bring plenty anyways, but I was curious as I have very little left of my own stock from FBBC.

Also, I can cert on a bunch of horseshoes afterwards, but some of them aren't fully labeled. My Polo2 shoes are fully labeled with "Polo" and 2, but the Polo1 and Polo0 just have 1 and 0 stamped into the shoe. Would this be a problem?

Post-contest feats/certs will be BYOS but the contest steel will be provided to ensure there are no problems regarding National qualification.

Looking forward to watching you mangle some stuff Brad!

I'm almost certain :cry I'm even more bummed now though! Thanks for that Brad :dry I'd love to give a #4 or #5 a go! I guess you'll just have to trust me when I say that the SCF Lite's aren't as hard as they look ;) You'll kill it man! Especially with all the adrenaline from the contest and friends watching!

I bought 20 Polo 1's from John awhile back and none of them say Polo on them so I don't think that will be a problem.

There's no way I can make it but I'll certainly encourage anyone on the fence to go - It sounds like the perfect time to learn the "how to" behind all the events normally contested from some guys who know what's going going on out there in contest land. Go get em!!!

I look forward to seeing the usual suspects at the contest and hopefully a few new guys. Like we have said before, Now is the time to come out and enjoy yourself. We are very laid back.

99% of the grip toys you can imagine will be there.

Over 50 grippers will be there with every in between step your looking for.

Rare grippers and grip related items.

Apollon's Axle.

An assortment of "Old" & "Original" style Blobs.

Inch Dumbell.

Priceless info, tips, and hands on help with technique for bending (any style), grippers, blobs and anything

else you need help with.

Alot more stuff I don't even feel like typing it all.

Hope some of you new guys get off the fence and make it over! :rock

Great idea guys! I love it! Good job.

Thanks Jedd! It'll be good times and no pressure on anyone. We'll be helping them squeeze that last bit of effort out...in our minds at least.

Who's the pro Scott? There are some topnotch pros in KC: Scott Fleming, Don Underwood, Mike Snelling, etc..

His name was Mike but I didn't catch his last name. It's probably Snelling though. I will try and talk Don into coming when I see him next week.

I knew that would get your attention Josh! :cool

If it was Mike Snelling, he's the lefthanded 2007 USAF national champion at 198. Don is a freakin beast too and I believe he's pulling at the Arnold this weekend. It's an honor to even qualify for that IMO. I'd love to see what either one of those guys can do grip wise. As for pulling them..I'll leave that to you Scott :D

Must not have been Snelling then, this Mike said he was an "Amature" left handed. He is nothing put power right. Also, he is alot heavier than 198.

Don is a freakin beast too and I believe he's pulling at the Arnold this weekend. You got that right, he is a monster, it's like pulling on a TRAIN!!!You are also right about him pulling at the Arnolds, that's why I didn't see him tonight.

I'd love to see what either one of those guys can do grip wise. Don crushed my HG300(2.7) No-Set last Thursday and he did it with the greatest of ease.

As for pulling them..I'll leave that to you Scott :DThank you so much. :dry

I am glad to see this type of event in KC. I am new to the forums and have just begun doing the beginners routine suggested be David Horne. In fact I just received my first gripper from IronMinds(The Sport), so there would be no way on earth I could compete in a single event otherwise I would be there in a heartbeat. I didn't realize some of big names listed; "Scott Fleming, Don Underwood, Mike Snelling" were from my home town! That's pretty cool.

Hope the event goes great!

Hello John III, welcome to the GB!

You should go even if you only play with the implements afterwards. The live coaching and ability to ask questions and make new friends will give a huge boost to your training.
