HISTORY HAS BEEN MADE!!!!!!!

On the afternoon of 13th April 2002 a man lifted more weight one handed on a 1" vertical bar than anyone in history....EVER!!!!

Jim Wylie v-bar lifted 233kg in front of David Horne, myself, Paul Patterson, Marc Wylie, Jason & Oliver Horne and Elizabeth Talbot.  Though his ring finger was nearly torn off in the attempt he contined to secure the grip, afterwards he showed us the blood seeping out from under the nail to have a memento of his effort.

Photos were taken so watch this space!

During the same day David was a whisker away from continentaling with one hand a 78kg dumbell with a 64mm (1mm above 2.5 inches) handle.  David finished the lift with his forearm vertical but still with a back bend and could not straighten his body up and had to dump the dumbell before he passed out, not once but TWICE!!!!!

This too has been videod and photographed so keep watching this space.

David Hoisted it from the floor to his upper thigh then curl/wrestled it up to his shoulder in about 4 attempts.  All the more impressive when his body weight was 99kg.

After these attempts we went through the Iron Grip Lift records for the benefit of  Paul Patterson who had travelled up from Luton.

The next lift was the 2 hands pinch lift where I set a new PB of 70kg which was nearly body weight.

Next was shouldering the 120kg granite stone where David hoisted it the highest onto his shoulder, but Jim and Richard Scott weren't far behind.

We then moved onto the inverted grippers and seated hammer curl.

After this we played with a 80kg stone for repetition presses.  Richard got 11reps and David managed to squeeze out 12reps.

We then loaded up another dumbell with a 2.5" handle which weighing 61kg and Jim managed to deadlift both (78kg and 61kg) and walk 6 feet.

We all finished off the training session with an all out set of 20 rep squats followed by a real leg burning 50 reps.

So all in all we had a great days lifting which goes to demonstrate that competition pushes the boundaries of personal and world records.

Congratulations to you all! Jim that's an impressive lift and I'm sure come record day you'll do more - nice one and good to see some blood too :D

I just wish I could have been there - fingers crossed I can make it to next years competition, although I'm not sure now is a good time - you're all getting too #### good :crazy

Well done again!

Nick

Way to go to all, especially Jim with the new PR and WR. Also Scott with the PR pinch, that is great that you are almost pinching your BW. Soon you will be telling us about your first rafter chin.

David, I am still pulling for you to put that Inch overhead.

Can't wait to see the pics, sounds like all involved had a great day of training. Thanks for the update.

Thanks Guys

It was good to see a little blood Nick but half the nails gone white now so I think it may be dead and I might end up loosing it :(

Dave's told me a few stories about training with you in the past.  The most memeroble one was the time you super glued the tip of your finger back on after a acident while training. As I recall you just cracked on with the rest of the training session anyway? I don't think I'd go to those extremes :)

Hope you can make it for next years comp.  I'll hopefully be much stronger by then and give you a run for your money ;)

Thanks again guys!

I was very impressed with Scott's lifting yesterday and I think that he's going to do really well in the Novice category this year - he just needs to spend a little more time at Dave's house doing some 'real' training.  Only joking Scott ;): your effort on the squats was outstanding - I only wish we'd had the video camera handy to capture that moment ;).  I also think Paul Patterson is going to do himself proud as he is already producing some good lifts.

The most impressive feat of the day was watching Dave struggle to lift the 78k dumbbell to knee height on his penultimate attempt only to recompose himself and get within a nats bollock shouldering the weight on his final attempt - very impressive stuff.

I just need to double my wrist curl, put 35kg on my pinch lift, hammer curl another 10kg and hold the number #2 shut inverted for about a minute and I should be in with a chance of beating Mr. Horne (and Miss Talbot by the looks of things).....err maybe next year ;)

Jim, I think you have the tools. Out of curiousity do you also enjoy lifting stones, or are you primarily interested in the purely grip events?

Michael, good to see you posting again. Are you going to compete in Mr Horne's Iron Grip contest again this year?

Thanks for the kind words Michael, Jim and Baldy, but honours definitely go to Mr Wylie ..... who doesn’t know the meaning of the word 'give up', you and Dave are really inspiring   ;)

What a great weekend and I will have to do some more proper training with you guys, but not just yet eh ....  :p

The pictures will take about 10 days to be developed and put on CD but as soon as i get them, I’ll be emailing wannagrip with a few attachments!

No less respect to you and Dave with those 20 and 50 rep squats...... thats what I call fun, and Dr Ken recons he trains hard squatting....... if only he knew about us :)   Definitely a NO WUS DAY DAVID!!!

Nic, so whats the story with the super glue, sounds great....... and I thought Dave was crazy :)

So how do you guys feel today, cos I feel like Ive appeared in one of those fighting videos we watched.  everything aches and i cant move certain things, some are really quite useful, like my arms and head.  Even my feet are sore!!  What some of you guys don’t know is that Dave 'MADE' me and Richard Scott go head to head with 3 minutes on rectangular fixes then 3 minutes of curls yesterday.  we drew on the first lift (86 reps I think) and 66 to 64 on the second.  Though I recon Rich should have be given the prize as my form was a little ropy and I thought he was going to pass out.  Though at one point i thought Dave lost count through laughing

Whats the point of lifting if you cant entertain the crowd :)

Im certainly feeling confident for August and I will do my best, as I’m sure everyone will.  Paul Paterson is a dark horse and one to watch.  very strong, very determined, focused, and thinks about his lifting.  all you need now is a bit of practice and experience to hone those skills and you'll do very well indeed mate.

Well, as my fingers are cramping up, I'm dehydrated because i cant lift my mug to drink water (biceps are too sore) but i couldn’t walk to the water cooler anyway as my hams and glutes are refusing to work! :)

So you guys, after the nail bending champs on Saturday, who’s up for some barrel lifting! ;)

Thanks for the kind words Jim and Scott.

Thanks to David Horne for giving me the opportunity to come and train with you guys, and to be able to witness some awsome lifting.

  Cheers

Hia Paul

It was good seeing you again on saturday and I dont think you have anything to worry about come August.

I recon the novices will be even closer than the open section as Faheem, Ian Marsland, Louis wilson, edd and yourself are equaly as strong.  Also Oliver Horne is competing in his first competition and he's a very strong 10 stone 14 year old (was easily 1HPG 30kg on saturday and working on the the #2), so with the Lynch system he's got a great chance to humble us 'old' men :)  Its exiting stuff and I cant wait.

I heard you have an impressive tatoo on your back mate....  :)

Phew! All I can think to say is thank goodness its singles only come August cos they sounds like #### hard workouts to me.

PS: pulled another PB in the 2 hand pinch and yet another in the left hand v-bar (trust me, Jim has nothing to worry about just yet).

Baldy,

I like lifting up stones (and barrels) but I'm not very good at it and have trouble putting anything heavy over head.  I would have to say that my strength in other areas is comparably weak when compared to my grip strength.  I just turn up at the gym and do what everyone else is doing.

David and Richard Scott (a friend who we train with) are the real stone and barrel specialists. I just join in and do my best.

Jim

It wouldnt be fair on the rest of us if your squating and pressing was as good as everything else. Thats just being selfish! :)

You handled that 120kg rock well on saturday and dont forget long arm make OH work much harder.

You have the ability to be a great all rounder rather than being limited to a specialist, so develop your strengths first then 'have a go' at the things your not quite such a natural at.  Youd better keep looking over one shoulder though, Jason Hornes catching up fast! :)

Oh and by the way, Eliz was an inch off shouldering an 80kg rock which was better than i did :)

Not a chance Scott - sufficent to say that the 2 hand pinch is a few kilos short of Davids old record as opposed to this years target. It has the biggest chance of helping me do ok come August.  ;)

Ummmm keeping things close to your chest eh steve, thats fair enough   ;)

But how about the other lifts?  not even a little hint of how the wrist curl, v bar, H bar curl, inverted gripper and 3.5" 1HDL are going?  :p

Well there's always the MDB challenge before then, hows that going?

Jim, Scott is right. If you were as good at the compound movements and odd object lifts as you are the grip stuff, you would probably get bored of training. Just doing your best is what it is all about.

Also don't count yourself out on the other stuff, sometimes with hard work a weakness can become a strength. Your grip will definitely give you an edge, since you can transfer all your body power without the grip being a weak link.
