Thickbar Size

I'm interested in purchasing a thickbar, but I'm not sure if I should go with a 2" or 2.5". I don't have monster hands, so I'm guessing 3" bars would be overkill for me. What's the criteria you use to decide which size to use?

What are your training goals? If you're working on the Axle Clean & Press for strongman (2" bar), I'd got with a 2.5". If you're working on grip strength for a contest I'd go with the 3" bar. Thick bar seems to carry over nicely from a thicker bar to a thinner one, but not the other direction.

Go to your local scrap yard and get a 7' piece of 2" heavy duty pipe and try that first (add some collars or weld some washers for your loading area). Scrap in my area is .25 cents a pound so the bar will cost you less than $10 bucks. I recently bought a 2.5" bar from Lance and it cost me about $70 including shipping - a bit more expensive, but a lot nicer too.
