mossman
like any good bender, i am always looking for new and interesting things to bend. the other day, i found a very odd bolt. it is 8''x3/8'', brass colored like a grade 8, but with grade 5 markings on the head. is this even possible to bend? doesnt seem like it. foggymountainmuscle
Do you think it's a grade five that has vastly exceeded the amount of tampering it needs to be a certified grade 5?
kerbjr
We got grade 5's here in MO that look just like you describe, they are a little harder than the silver colored ones..oops, I just noticed you listed it as 3/8, never mind what I just wrote havnt had my coffee yet......Brett Edited July 1, 2004 by kerbjr
mossman
well i thought it might be 5/16, but then i got to looking at it. maybe this could be a good nail for something above red. its got to be harder than a red, right?
SqeezeMasterFlash
I suggest you pile all the weight you can lift on a loading pin, stick this bolt through the middle and see what it does. If it's really a 3/8" grade 5 it will definitely take more to bend than you can lift. Figuring a 1/4" grade 5 takes over 350lbs to deflect, this could take well over 1000. AP
If it's 5/16 then it wouldn't take much more than a red to bend. If a blue is approx 180kilos and a reg grade 5 is about 225. And a red is in the 260-280 range or so, then a grade 5 5/16 would be a bit over 300kilos. Maybe do-able (at least kinkable) for some of the bigger benders on the board. Of course this is just an edumacated guess Edited July 1, 2004 by AP
SqeezeMasterFlash
I suppose if it was only 5/16 and 8" long it might only be around 300k. But if it's 3/8" then it would definitely be alot more, probably around 380-400k by my guess. But considering I haven't taken a math class in 6 years and a physics class in 8 I wouldn't take my guess as gold. By the way, great new avatar AP
