Roark
John Davis, the great American weightlifter, who remained undefeated for well over a decade, and who was so famous that a letter sent from Surrey, England addressed only to 'John Davis, World heavyweight, weight- lifting champion' was directed by postal authorities to York, Pennsylvania, began his lifting career on Nov 20, 1937 when he placed third at a contest in NYC. Age 16. In June 1938 Weaver (yes of Weaver stick fame) measured Davis. At 185 lbs, wrist 7.4 and forearm 13.4. Biceps 15.9". Later Davis would managed to lift the Apollon railcar wheels overhead. A grip feat that Davis accomplished, and to which he attributed no special amazement caused the onlookers some appreciation, and though some details of distance are missing, nonetheless impressive: Davis carried a 100 lb dumbell in each hand, one of the bells having a 'thick' handle, went around the corner, up three flights of stairs, and placed the bells in a rack- all without ever putting the bells down. Davis died in 1984 and is buried in Santa Fe National Cemetery in New Mexico.
