Challange Bars

Probably the 180, 200, 220, 240, 260, and maybe someone else who's bent a red can verify if the 280 is the equivalent of the red in terms of effort required to bend. Keep in mind that David Horne has tested some reds in the 250 range. But even the reds apparently have some variation. With a great struggle I'm doing the 260, but am nowhere near bending my reds.

How do you know you are nowhere near it Eric? Last workout I fully bent a 240k challenge bar in around 20 sec but could only make a slight kink on a 247.5k bar and would without a doubt have left no mark whatsoever on a 260k bar. To me a 260k bar (which is "only" 8 per cent harder than the 240k) would have felt the same as a 2000k bar. The step from bending a bar easily to not being able to make even a slight dent is small indeed for me at least. This is not to say that reds are easy.

Good point Mikael. Maybe I am closer than I realise. This is a positive way of looking at it. :D

I have kinked the 3 reds so far that I've tried. I have put a 30 degree bend in the 270k bar so far.

When I calibrate, the weight tells the story in that it will bend the steel so far, and then adding some more weight will fully bend it.

There is other factors, namely in bolts and the Ironmind 'red' steel that the challenge bars and nails do not have, and this is a springy/fight back feel. So I'm guessing that when you apply pressure with your hands at 'x' poundage, you may have to apply more to overcome this bounce effect. Also on the bolts the heads can get in the way, and of course some people like short bars and others long.

So far, the challenge bars seem to be quite uniform, although the jump from 6mm bars to 8mm bars has scared some, and maybe has contributed to a 10k extra 'feel'.

I don't think it would be right to add percentages for different 'feels' as some people will not feel any differences.

For our contests/challenges I'm still very happy with what we have set up.

Going from a 6 mm 170k bar to a 8 mm 190k bar felt just like that. To me they seemed spot on in describing the relative difference.

As you should be! ;)

I know I'm preachin to the choir, but the Challenge bars are by far my favorite piece of steel with which to train. Weldon and I are fixin to pool our resources and get a big shipment for this very purpose. It sure beats gettin poked in the palm by bolt and nail tips. :cry

And boy am I looking forward to getting them. I bent my first blue last night (actually a cut down yellow, but eric said it was basically a blue) and now I need something new. I've always been jealous of Eric's nice smooth edged challenge bars.

Get ready David, nice order coming soon.

Eric, don't forget to let me know what you want before I order, i'd like to get that done today.
