Chuckie B.
I was in home depot looking for course tape to try on the sides of the IM pinch grip block and found it in the paint dept. What I bought was the 4" wide ladder step tape long enough to cover both sides. Went home put it on just below the top edge, chalked it, (very course) and gave it a go. Well I worked up to my max #45 very easily, went on to get #80. Then went down to #60 for three sets of four reps with both hands. Great training aid, you guys might want to try it. -------------------------------------- "Live long, stay strong" - C.F.B.
Sonny
I definitely gotta try that. I'm not too pleased with the IM pinch block! I was just gonna put some hockey tape on it!
ianders1
Has anyone tried grip tape (for skateboards) or sex wax (for surfboards)?
Revtor
It seems to me that by putting griptape on the block you're just giving more friction, which allows you to pull more weight.. If anything, this makes it less of a grip specific workout and more of a full body workout in my view.. Unless youre just shooting for a #, or calluses on your finger tips, I say keep it slick and just squeeze harder. ~Steve
Chuckie B.
Revtor, With the grip tape IM block it works your grip more and your whole arm more when using sets of reps. It's got to help get to a higher max. I'll follow this post up after two months of training. ----------------------------------- "Live long, stay strong" - Charles F. OldGuy
The block is supposed to be slick and slippery, so as to limit the weight that can be handled. Otherwise you might as well save your money and use a 3'' wide block of wood. Using something to make the Ironmind block easier to lift, could be compared to doing something to prevent an RT handle from revolving. OldGuy
I use an Ironmind block and also a 3'' block of very smooth polished wood. Both without tape. I have too a block that is as wide as a 50 lb blob.
ulgrim
http://www.angelfire.com/linux/ulgrim/pinchblock.jpg 5 minutes, a 2x4, 4 nails, some duct tape and a canvas belt I just made it, it's 4.5 inches wide, and fairly smooth Later I'll drill a hole through it and use some kind of rope or chain + a loading pin (home-made loading pin, also. Dumbell with a collar on one end and a rope through the other.)

Mark your center point on the bottom of your block..... drill a 1/4 inch pilot hole at that mark about 2inches deep. Take a 3/8 lagscrew eyebolt 2 1/2 inches long and screw it into your 1/4 pilot hole until flush with the wood. You may have to take a screw driver and put it through the eye and twist it on down when the eyebolt starts to get a good bite.. put a 3/8 snaplink on your eyebolt to hook to your loading pin and you will have a very neat looking pinch block
Chuckie B.
Gentlemen, In my last post the sentence "It's got to help get to a higher max." should have been "It's got to help get to a higher max with a slick and slippery IM block." I'm only trying to find a way to get more work out of the implement, to get stronger. It might work, it might not. The way my grip and arms feel, it should work. I'll post again on this subject after two months of training. -------------------------------------- "Live long, stay strong" - C.F.B. Rick Browne
Ulgrim, I have made many pinch implements ranging in all shapes, sizes materials. from wood to stainless steel. Welded, bolted et all. some 20 or more in all.... Some costly some cheap to make.. Anyway, a good cheap one is to buy a 32 oz rubber mallet. It is 5 inches long and 3 inches thick. They cost about $6 It is shaped like a barrel which is the shape I was after. Cut the handle off flush with the mallet head and thread an eyebolt into the handle. The handle is a Hardwood so drill your pilot hole to assist. Use a 1/4 inch eyebolt 3 inches long.. It is a slick little implement for not much money
ulgrim
Cool, I'll try that I'm stocking up on pinch implements now anyways, that sounds like a good addition thanks
