kerbjr
I have been trying to work up to grade 5 carriage bolts, the kind with only an inch or so of threading, 6inch by 5/16. Question how much harder are these than the ones that are threaded all the way up? I am still new at this but was just curious..Thanks...Brett Kerby
terminator
There are no Grade 5's that are threaded all the way up, at least the ones over about two inches in length. The threads weaken the bolts substantially, and if you need a "Graded" or medium to high strength bolt for your application the threads would be counterproductive to the application. SqeezeMasterFlash
The only bolts I've seen that are threaded all the way up are substantially easier than the ones with minimal threading. Usually so much easier that you only have to bend them a few times before they snap.
EricMilfeld
Is "5/16" a type error? If not, that has to be one insanely difficult bend!
kerbjr
The 5/16 all thread are indead not grade 5, sorry...but the 5/16 carriage bolts are. I can bend the all thread stuff pretty consistantly but it is a max effort...I can just barely even kink the grade 5, by kink I mean just barely even distort it....Just curious how much harder the grade 5 was...Also is there something in between I could work on? Thanks to all for your input....Brett
