Charlie Hayes1
Thank you. Not to make this too personal, but because I am disabled I am used to people (mis-)judging my abilities. Ditto for my height; due to said disability, I am quite tall sitting down - I have a long torso and long armspan - but I am quite short. Either people are shocked when they meet me sitting and I have to get up or they assume that I am somehow "less" because I am short. Also, I have good genes and I can't count the number of times people assumed I was a kid, even into my 30s and married. The reason for saying this is that it taught me to (try) not make snap judgements about people and their motives or their abilities. The handful of really strong men I have actually met never did a certification in any strength sport in their lives and none of them ever boasted of their strength, although they demonstrated it in their daily lives when necessary! I am not suggesting certifications are a bad thing, they provide a goal, but it should be purely an inner-directed one, since it is not going to end world hunger or anything. I am old enough that my best days are almost certainly behind me, although my grip is actually beginning to improve recently, as I have become a lot more intentional and organised than in the past.
