Hey i am new to the gripboard and had some questions regarding homemade thick bars.

Where did you get the materials to make the bar?

What is the max amount of weight the bar can safely hold?

Any help would be appreciated greatly. Thanks

I just wrapped my old lifting straps around my dumbbell handles. It's not quite 2" diameter, but it's still tough. It worked so well that I just went to REI to get 10' of 2" nylon webbing. I'm going to use the webbing to rig up a more permanent and secure solution than using my lifting straps. I'd get those bars from ironmind, but I have "powerblocks" and don't want to buy/store any plates.

Has anyone done this?

How thick of a bar are you trying to make? I made my 2" bar from 2 inch OD pipe from the hard wear store. I cut it at 6 foot then filled it with cement. Ive lifted 350 on it and it did not bend.

go to any place that sells pipe, i have a fence company down the street that carries schedule 40 pipe and that works great. You can sleave it or just take a piece of 2" pipe and put some bulldog collars and you have a 2" bar.

I've called a couple different metal fabrication shops when I was shopping for a 3" thick bar. One shop was willing to sell me a *solid* 3" diameter bar 8 feet in length for $85. I would probably have to pay them more to have them machine the ends down to 2" for olympic plates, but the price was good. I don't remember what the other place wanted for a 3" solid bar.

For my 2" bar, I've got a 7 foot length of 2" diameter solid steel rod that my dad gave to me. It's been loaded to over 800lbs and just barely gave a hint of bending, so it may be good for up to a ton ;)

I bought a 12 foot solid 2" bar, had two 22" pieces cut for dumbbells and slide 2" diameter pvc tubing over the gripping areas of the barbell and dumbbells for a final 2 3/8" diameter bar. The good thing about that is that I can slide the PVC off to go down to 2" whenever I want. The original bar cost about $90 and I bought it locally. The original weight was 129#s. The 7 foot bar weighs about 75#s and the dumbbells weigh about 20#s each. I had a spare length of bar about 10" left over.
