Roark
As many of you know, this book includes grip strength feats, and will soon be available in English- hopefully later this year. The following words are from the author: I have been working on a translation of The Kings of Strength, Edmond Desbonnet’s massive history of professional strongmen for over three decades. I am extremely happy to announce that the completed book is now at McFarland Publishing Company, and it will appear sometime later this year. A century ago, the barrel-chested strongman in his leopard skins, Roman sandals and globe barbell was a common performer in fairs, circuses and vaudeville theaters. Before this phenomenon disappeared, French gym owner, journalist and athlete Edmond Desbonnet published in 1911 a colorful history of these mighty men. The Kings of Strength records and preserves the biographies of over two hundred strength performers and bodybuilders from ancient times up to the early 1900s. Since he knew and interviewed many of these men and women, Desbonnet was able to put a human face on the strongmen and strongwomen who made their livings by performing spectacular strength stunts for the entertainment of the public. The Kings of Strength is lavishly illustrated with 240 photographs and engravings, many of which are published in this volume for the first time. In addition, the book is extensively annotated with a complete index and a bibliography as well as the first complete listing of works by Edmond Desbonnet himself.
