OldGuy
I have an idea for a dumbbell. It would be made from two solid steel cylinders, the diameter of the Inch dumbbell globes. The weight would be 100 lbs. The handle would be 2 3/8'' in diameter, and would screw onto the cylinders. Handles of different size diameters from 1 '' to 3'' could be added or removed. On the outside of the cylinders and in the center, a bar of standard or Olympic diameter could be added also by screwing in. to which plates could be added and locked in place by collars. This dumbbell would be versatile and could even be used for blob type lifts when taken apart.
Tom of Iowa2
Good idea Old Guy. Jerry is working on an adjustable dumbell that will take a person form #135 to 235#-with a 2 3/8"handle.Not quite the same as your idea but adjustable. The INCH loadable thread got him to thinking.....he is a machinist and does welding and makes high prformance gears for transfer cases of 4wd vehicles. Also there is plenty of rotation with his 8 3/8" steel dumbells....the cast iron rounded globes of the INCH does not cause some mysterious rotational force or no more so than his solid steel dumbells....he has a tester that has lifted the INCH so???This tester doesn't think the 235#,2 3/8" dumbell has any more rotational force than the 228# Millenium either.....no knurlying on the 235 either
OldGuy
Tom, it would take a machinist to build a dumbbell like the one I proposed.
OldGuy
Rotation is cause partly by the lifter's fingers and thumb, and also by any uneven weight distribution in the globes or plates. The heavier side would want to move down to the bottom. When the handle is not fixed the rotation is somewhat neutralized and occurs to a lesser extent. Sybersnott
Congratulations, OldGuy... you just stole Roark's "fairbar" idea.
