Interview with Mike Murray

Could you tell us a little about your background in lifting?
I started lifting in grade 9 to be a better wrestler and football player.

How did you get into grip training?
I was already training grip a bit for strongman when Adrian Kimmett introduced me to the Captains of Crush and I became hooked.

You are now a GripBoard Mash Monster, what would you recommend to those aspiring to close this gripper?
Set a goal and be consistent in your training.

What does your current grip routine look like?
3x /week, heavy day, speed day and volume day.

How has your grip routine changed since you first started training your grip?
Yes, I just started on my current program, I have previously followed KTA.

There seems to be a significant variation in the frequency of grip workouts among trainees. Have you experimented with workout frequency and it’s affect on your training?
As I just alluded to, I've recently reduced my frequency and increased my weekly volume. Hasn't been long enough to tell what if any effect it will have.

What are your favorite grip exercises?
Love my grippers!!

What kind of starting routine would you recommend for a trainee new to grip training?
2-3x per week and not to intense, ease into it as you would any other training routine.

Who do you most admire in gripdom?
The current Canadian grip champion Eric Roussin.

If you were to start over again with your grip training, what would you do differently?
Would have joined the GripBoard sooner.

What do you believe is the most difficult grip exercise?
I hate any key pinch lift, beats the hell out of my fingers and has minimal carry over to other lifts.

What are some of your personal bests in grip exercises?
FBBC Crusher 2.5" 175.53lbs, IM Rolling Thunder 205lbs, IM Hub 60.37lbs, CoC #3 from CCS

What do you believe is the most common mistake made by new grip trainees?
Probably trying to much to soon and blowing out their hands.

What do you consider to be the greatest grip feats of all time?
Derek Poundstone lifting the "Louis Cyr Stone", a natural stone weighing in at a whopping 530lbs to a 30" platform

Do you have any parting advice for readers?
Consistency is key, don't miss reps or skip workouts.
