Chicago Fit Expo Grip Contest

First there was a Grip Contest at the Los Angeles Fit Expo in 2011.

Then, when San Jose first held its Fit Expo in 2012, Odd Haugen was there with a Grip Contest.

The first Chicago Fit Expo is the first weekend in May, and there is going to be grip contest there too:

This one has four events:

Rolling Thunder

Apollon's Axle

Silver Bullet

Little Big Horn

Good opportunity for someone to set a new LBH World Record...

Hopefully work permits me to go. Im already registered. Im only competing in 2 events, Silver Bullet and Little Big Horn. With Nationals a month after Im not gonna get too radical and take a risk of injury with the problems I still got. Id rather risk it at Nationals. Hopefully they have a good turnout. Im curious what the big boys will pull on the horn. Should be alot of fun.

I'll be there on Saturday coaching a lifter in the strongman show. Unfortunately can't stay for Sunday's events.

Thanks for sharing this!

Martins will be very tough to beat. Two things that may help me are the fact that he'll also be competing in MAS and that he weighs more than me (so I'll win the extra points in the events where we tie).

I'm looking forward to the challenge!

I think the only event he is "guaranteed" to win is the Axle. Never know about the RT...

Best to you for the Comp.

I had a good day. I don't have the full results, but here's what I know:

1st - Eric Roussin

2nd - Martins Licis

3rd - Ulis (can't remember his last name)

Brad wasn't there, and Kody only competed in the Little Big Horn and Silver Bullet events.

I was happy to finish first in the Rolling Thunder, with a lift of 242. Martins got 237, but failed at 242.

I finished third in the axle. I lifted 414, and then got 434 up to about knee height. Martins got 434 and almost got 454. Ulis got 454 to win the event.

I finished second in the Little Big Horn. Kody and I were the only ones to lift 201. At that point, we upped the weight to 226. I failed, and Kody was successful. He then went for the world record attempt at 238. He got it up a few inches, but could not complete the lift. Next time.

I finished third in the Silver Bullet with a time of 22 seconds. Clay Edgin got around 45 seconds. Kody broke the world record of just over 57 seconds!

For the benefit of those grip guys who do not know who Martins Licis is, he is a young man (under 25) originally from Latvia who is a rising strongman, but typically enters Odd Haugen's grip contests. Not a grip guy per se, he can be very impressive in a grip competition, and is always getting better. For Eric to beat Martins in a contest that has 3 thick bar style implements, is a really Big Deal. Congratulations!

Oh, and Martins is a great guy, good energy, upbeat, fun, etc.

Thanks, Mike! Martins is a very strong guy. I learned he won a silver medal at the MAS World Championships! MAS seems to be his main focus, and he jumps into the grip comps just for kicks.

Yeah, the guy will enter the Strongman, MAS, and Grip competitions all in the same weekend.

I feel lucky when I can get him in the Silver Bullet, even though he is not a Grip Guy. Your beating him in the Rolling Thunder is something on your resume that most probably cannot relate to, but you certainly can!
