Shooter77B50
I just got back on the grip board. My grip doesn't feel as near as strong as it used to be. I have not trained grip in a very long time. I have been training alot of Olympic lifts. When I was at my best I could clean and jerk 200 pounds at 160 pounds bodyweight. How did my lifting standards compare on my c&j? I got to 135 snatch at 160 bodyweight. I took me a year to get decent at the Olympic lifts. I did alot of single rep training and the most reps I went up to is 3 because I believed strength over endurance. Everything is weaker. A friend told me I could be even stronger if I used a 10 rep range until I can do reps with 200 pounds consistently and then gradually drop the rep range back to my lower reps. How did I get weaker than I was? There was I 50 pound drop in weight. I am 50 pounds weaker.
EJ Livesey
Your grip is weaker because you don't use it. Plain and simple. First thing is stop listening to your friend. What works for him doesn't work for you. Experiment and find out what works for you. My guess is you are weaker because you don't eat clean and enough, your sleep sucks and your training is wrong for your body. You will have better advice pertaining to lifting on a lifting forum. This all seems like common sense to me.
JoshW
Don't let anyone else tell you what works for you. When I've helped friends in the past and recently I don't push new methods on them I use what's worked for them in the past as they should know how their body responds to different exercises, what works for them and what doesn't. Do what works for you but also training grip won't harm your training.
