Jared Goguen Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 I've been doing as much bending as my body will allow lately with Ironmind Pads and its starting to pay off I think. So with this I'm pretty much maxing myself out and the over all bend takes me almost 4 minutes. Right now I have put some of my other grip goals on hold and have been forcing on bending mostly, I would like to get the Red Nail sometime next year. Bending starts at 4:50 if you want to skip a head. 1 Quote My YouTube channel - grip, and shop projects.

EJ Livesey Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 good job bro. your technique looks real good, and it seems you are starting to get the bar up higher than before. one thing that may help on the kink is to get the bar up high and put your chin down, pin your chin to your chest. try it out, see how it feels. 2 Quote Junior steel bender in training The only limits are the ones YOU set. Jose Cabrera Posted November 23, 2014 Posted November 23, 2014 Nice bend brother but before anybody says it I will because i heard it a thousand times, drop the doubles, for the next 3 years at a minimum. NO DOUBLES! Quote
Jared Goguen Posted November 23, 2014 Author Posted November 23, 2014 Nice bend brother but before anybody says it I will because i heard it a thousand times, drop the doubles, for the next 3 years at a minimum. NO DOUBLES! Thanks for the advice but I don't see the problem with doing doubles if 80-90% of the time I only use IMP's and then I want to push what I am capable of and maybe work at moving up the Irongrip freestyle list. If I am missing something please let me know. Quote My YouTube channel - grip, and shop projects.
Jose Cabrera Posted November 23, 2014 Posted November 23, 2014 And trust me I'm no where near the strongest of benders, but i have bent reds before a shoulder bump, i would never have been able to deal with the pain if i had used anything over IMP's (thanks Mike) force production is just so different, I feel like with doubles you can almost open your hands and bend the same steel, with smaller wraps its true hand and upper body power, its come in handy with all my work and training. I can assure you double wraps would not have produced the same effect. Just an honest tip, i wasted quite a few bending sessions with double wrap BS, when you are killing edgins in imps then you can hit the doubles i think, and kill some monster steel, till then, you are wasting time and losing out on hand conditioning that will carry over to all aspects of hand strength. Well.....that's my opinion, do what feels right, thats most important. 1 Quote
Jared Goguen Posted November 23, 2014 Author Posted November 23, 2014 I really do appreciate the advice. Obviously I'm still rather new to bending and learning as much as I can as fast as I can. 1 Quote My YouTube channel - grip, and shop projects.
Jose Cabrera Posted November 23, 2014 Posted November 23, 2014 No problem bud, stick to imps for a long while, concider them your doubles you wont regret it, squoosh a grip rite 60d in one imp then do as you like. The pain tolerance is the main factor once you move to 5/16 steel in imps trust me it (bad word filter)in hurts. 5/16 1018 crs got me there as 12l14 is a tad bit harder, that's what the red is made of. Work volume for a good 6 months, get them hands tough, tuf-foot helps big time for thickening the skin. Chinese dit da jow helps with healing, and coconut oil will keep your skin from becoming a rhino's ass. Jow and tuf-foot daily, coconut oil as needed. Youll get there just follow the big fellas. 1 Quote

Billy Jack Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 Very nice progress Jared. I have not been bending long myself, but if I could give one huge piece of advice it would be to explode more quickly into each hit. It appears you are taking your hits pretty slowly. I used to do this when I first started a couple of months ago and i did not progress very quickly. I then realized that my stamina was limiting me so I focused all my strength in super short bursts. Every time I bend a bar now I hit the bar very quick and hard as if I am going to break it in half with one hit. Feed off the pain. While speed of an explosive initial hit will generate more power, this is how you get hurt. You are creating a ton of back pressure into 3 complicated and prone to injuries joints. Also, especially working in IMP's, you need to really progress on the technique and the feel of the steel in your hands. The kink is as technical as an Oly lift. Better to go a little slower and really figure out the minutia. Condition everything over time. Think long term and build up your hand toughness and your strength. Well.....that's my opinion, do what feels right, thats most important. I have to disagree to a point. In my case my hands were stronger and tougher than my shoulders and chest - so using doubles allowed me to do the volume work to strengthen those areas so they could catch up with my hands. So it depends I guess. 2 Quote When people used to ask him how it was he became so incredibly strong, it was always the same, "strengthen your mind, the rest will follow". The 150kg bar is around the Red Nail. You just need to email them with what you want and he gets back to you with a price. My suggestion was given with the thought that he was at a point where he was comfortable with his technique and his hands were toughened up enough already.
