Guest gripmaster316
Just to get things rolling along, what is anybody's definition of rep? Do you close it, and then go all the way back?? Do you close it, go back until the handles are parallel? Or something in between? And is their a high success rate in closing a harder gripper by doing lots of reps on a level lower? Are reps even important? Or do negatives and strap holds take higher priority? Sorry for so many questions...
HandsofStone
When I personally do reps with a gripper, I let it open up all the way. If I don't do that, I can't convince myself that I performed a rep. As for the high success rate of using a gripper for high reps, I'm not sure. Everyone is different though, so you just can't just label those out of the equation. What may not work for the majority, may work for you. My best advice to give you is the trial and error approach. You can never go wrong there... L.J. JeffPeterson
Although most won't like this my rep is allowing the gripper to open to about 1/4 to 1/2 inch. The last bit is the hardest so that's how I train it.
bender
I beleive everyone has their own definition of a rep, and what type of rep you do is dependant on your goals. If you want to have a huge number of reps with a gripper, just open them to parallel. If you want to focus on strength, let the gripper open as far as your hand will allow with out re-setting it. For me, and I'd advise to any person aiming for the #3, to release the gripper each rep and instantly re-set it each time. it builds the max-effort mentality and keeps the focus on the one-rep attempt of the #3. After listening to past arguments about what a rep is, this seems to be the only "fair' way of defining a rep. But of course, if your training is for the last 1/8" like Jeff mentions, very short range of motions are ideal. Again, it all depends on what your goals are. Sybersnott
A full rep with a gripper is one in which the gripper is FULLY opened and then COMPLETELY shut as in the handles touch.
Tou
Due to my small hands, I have to set the gripper to close it. So for me, a full rep is starting at the point where thr gripper is the most open with a secure grip on the handles. I open as much as I can without having to re-set the gripper.
