Strongmanpharmd
Hey guys, Thinking about doing the King Kong of Grip contest and I have access to 3 of the implements but not the Ironmind Horn. Is there any other lifting I can do to get by and make a solid attempt at it? Thanks.

Frank Pizzo
My only idea off the top of my head is to cut a wooden baseball bat somewhere in the middle where the barrel starts to go into the handle and then put an eyebolt in it. The only thing is I don't think barrels come quite as big as 3 inches but they get close. Again this is just an idea, if someone else knows a better way to make one I'm also interested. Especially since I don't have an extra wooden bat laying around lol.
Electron
Train on a 2" vbar or loading pin, it's the closest approximation. Periodically practice on a wooden horn trainer, either the baseball bat or carving down a dowel would be fine. Between these two things and actually getting stronger, you won't be doing too bad come contest day.

Stephen Ruby
I didn't really train this event that much but I did use the loading pin a few times and ended up hitting about the same exact numbers I hit on the loading pin-a little less since the horn spins sometimes meaning technique is little important to prevent that- Some great suggestions though I'll probably just use a loading pin again this year but will focus on bringing up my overall body strength to where it was since I think that helps a lot also. Good luck though.

Good luck though. I think this will be my main strategy...Grip will always be a secondary focus for me while I continue to compete in Strongman. However, I think doing more grip training should translate into better event strength so I'm looking forward to how training for this contest will impact the rest of my training. Jeff Parker
They are all over ebay Have you seen a listing? I have been looking for a few months and nothing comes up. Post the listing if you see one because I am interested. Maybe I'm not searching for the right terms but I've tried a wide variety .

I had been watching eBay for months last year and finally bit the bullet and ordered one from IronMind during their Black Friday sale (15% off). Perhaps there are replicas on eBay? Jeff Parker
I will probably buy one from ironmind eventually but with shipping it's $90 and out of the question right now
Strongmanpharmd
Exactly Jeff...how often does this event show up at contests anyway?
Stephen Ruby
Exactly Jeff...how often does this event show up at contests anyway? King kong was the only contest to have it last year I believe
Tank Andrade
I made a wood one for last years comp and my numbers were close to what i hit on comp day. Vbar would be good as well
Andrew P
I find the 2" vbar builds the strength, but the feel of the taper is hard to replicate without a horn.
slazbob
It probably be cheaper to cut an aluminum bat to have something with taper.

acromegaman
I'm not able to make them anymore because I switched jobs. It sucks too because I don't even have one. LOL. I'm Delmar btw

Is there any other lifting I can do to get by and make a solid attempt at it? Thanks. Keith, I'm one of the guys that Josh Dale sent the e-mail to regarding your interest in grip contests. I'm in Lawrence. I have Delmar Carter's version of the Anvil Trainer - very similar to the Ironmind version, visually at least. I don't have a Euro Pinch or the Ironmind Hub though. You're more than welcome to come over to my place and train. I have some grippers and a few 2" vbars. I also have the USAWA version of the 2" vbar if you're interested in that. Strongmanpharmd
Ben that would be great! I do own a IM Hub so I'm good on that. Do you have set days that you train? Just let me know via email what your schedule is like. Thanks!
