Tom of Iowa2
Has anyone with LESS than 8 inch hands ever done a 'no set'close on a #3? Must be 7 15/16" or less ? Just wondering? With my 7 3/4"it just 'looks' like it's impossible.......
Patrik_F
Ofc it also depends a little on how wide the gripper is, with a 3 1/4" plus #3, forget it...
OldGuy
Tom, can you do a no set close with any of the Ironmind grippers?
Tom of Iowa2
Old guy, Yes.And i see where you are going with this .... I think? Yes I close a #2 very easily without a set..so IF i was strong enough i should be able to do the same with a #3-without a set...good point...In fact I closed no.2 for a few reps without a set when they were first delivered. But basically I'm doing it with 3 fingers.....When I learned about the set I doubled my reps and doubled the length of time i could hold it closed.Immediately. But...the #3 to me ...seems impossible.(without a set ) I guess If a person can close a #2 without a set...why not a #3?Obviously(after thinking about it)'do able'.. But???? Anybody less than 8"do a 'no set'?
Patrik_F
It is possible but a lot harder for the shorter handed guy because he will be that much more out of groove and in a weaker leverage position. It takes quite much open hand and fingertip strength to even start the #3 without a set, the gripper will have to sort of slide into a better groove. RSW
Closing without a set requires more sweep strength. As Oldguy pointed out, if you can no-set close a #2, you should be able to no-set close a #3 if you are strong enough. As Wannagrip has pointed out, anyone who can no-set close a #3 in each hand is at the top of his game in regards to crushing strength. Therefore a no-set close is a superior feat to a close with a set, just as a full ROM deadlift with the same weight is more impressive than a pull from the knees. Setting is allowed by IM for certification, as long as the close still starts from parallel.
tmmicklabs
Tom. I will do this for you this year. My hands are 7 and 1/2 inches from tip of middle finger down to my first wristline. My # 3 is 3 and 1/4 wide. I just tried it without a set and got it down to touching my thumb. My thumb is 3/4 inches wide. btw...I do not set grippers. If I set the gripper first then I cannot even budge it. I cannot even close a trainer if I set it first. And yes I have KTA and have watched the videos. Setting does me no good at all. I build up my momentum with my sweep. Edited May 13, 2003 by tmmicklabs
