Obscure Grip Training

Recommended Posts

I have been doing my research and have tried many methods of grip training that I have found from various sources, from Climbing websites through to workmen's advice!

I was wondering if any of you guys knew of any far flung ideas that may or may not be of use to us here at the Gripboard.

My first offering is Stick tug-of-war, where a 2ft piece of broom pole is grabbed at either end, the object being to wrest it from the grip of the other person!

Makes for strong wrists and hands......

What else?

I have tried some digging and some sawing with a hand saw, that was hard work and worked the grip/wrist good. Did it on occasion though I dont do much manual labour. Ofc also try cutting some electric wire, have worked for some :tongue

Digdogz,

It is funny that you mention the wooden broomhandle thing.

My Grandpa and his buddy would used to perform this feat back in the old day. Each on the other end and twisting in oppisite directions.

Neither one would give up though. The broom hand would snap into.

I never witnessed this myself but my Dad and others witnessed this feat many times. My Grandpa passed away about 15 years ago, long before I knew of COC grippers. I wish he could have had a go at a # 3 back in his hay-day.

Has anyone of us on this board ever witnessed the above feat or tried it out ?

Does anyone think this feat is even possible ?

Rope climbing. With VERY thick manila hemp rope. I wish I had a place to try this, but I don't. Great grip builder and forearm builder too!! :)

Snott-

just do thick rope chins. It'll have the same effect.

I've been meaning to get around to attempting the thin pinch grip training that Brookfield mentioned in MOHS with the asian dentists training with little wood plugs hammered into a board so that they could pull teeth out with their fingers.

Another thing I was going to look at months ago but haven't gotten to it was stiring a bucket of gravel and water with a trowel.

I've read about this stick game you talked about. The source I read said it was a popular game in frontier days. The description I read had them sitting down feet against the opponents feet. Try to lift them or unseat them through upperbody strength only.

I was talking with Warren Tetting the other night and he told me about a guy he knows who does a variation of strap holds using steel banding found on heavy shipping containers. The thinness makes it very hard and so far the man has had very good results with it.

This is a great exercise!! Not only is it a lot harder than regular strapholds, the steel doesn't get torn up like straps do. I use a steel ruler I bought at Wal-Mart for less than $1: Pic of Straps and Ruler

Edit: This wasn't my idea and unfortunately I can't remember exactly where I first heard about it…

1-ply, 2-ply, 4-ply, 6-ply, 8-ply and I still couldn't do a straphold with the #3. :angry::angry::angry: That's when I switched to the ruler. :D
