Roark
Has anyone here any idea of where steel balls can be purchased? Think in terms of huge ball bearings- perhaps a foot in diameter. Of course, new ones, if they exist for any purpose would be extremely expensive, so used would serve the purpose. I am interested in any diameters from 5" to about 12". Would make a great grip addition. Any leads appreciated!
Jonathan McMillan
Roark, I bought some light training shot putts from a local athletic retailer for highschools. Try looking up some in your area as these would be the least expensive route to what you need I think. There's a company here in Canada that sells a big hollow steel ball that you can fill to adjust the weight but it costs $1000 Jon@han
Roark
Thanks, Jon@han. What is the intended purpuse for that $1,000 hollow ball?

Tom of Iowa2
Roark, Would Cannon balls do? www.cannonltd.com 1 3/8incher on up to 8inches(as in life a 12 incher is a rarity ) 8 incher weighs 70lbs...I find that adequate for throwing go to their index and hit:Implements and accesories BTW:8inch,70lbs,is $80. 6 3/8inch,35lbs.,is $50.They cast and manufacture their own cannon replicas9those would be some fun loading implements!!!) and perhaps they would make you some larger'ammunition? Steel Ball for loading?20 inch diameter.Weighs 135 empty.Hollow and loadable.(Mortar Mix takes weight up to 458lbs....thats a good starting weight ) $399 www.strongmanequipment.com IF? not what you are looking for perhaps these companies can send you in the right direction. I've found used cannon balls for less at auctions. But $80 for the 70 pounder seems reasonable?
Roark
Thanks, Tom. I priced one at a foundry years ago- 12" nickel-plated ball, only a couple thousand...
Tom of Iowa2
Here is a site that has some cool stuff.I've thought about the grip/strength exercise that one could do with these antic artillery shells and cannon balls. Not only do you have some 'odd'implements for lifting but you apparently have honest ot gosh Civil War relics/antiques for the coffe table. Compared to that price quote you got for that 12 inch casting some of these antiques are a bargain. The Civil War,6.25inch,32lb cannonball for $295 doesn't seem that steep for a dual purpose toy....out of my price range for now but maybe..someday. There are some 12 and 15 inch mortar ammo that are awesome too... Not 'steel balls' but what the heck.........

Clay Edgin
They are hard to find unless you live anywhere a rock quarry exists. Many of the quarries will use lots of steel balls anywhere from 6" to 18" to crush rock. Once the balls get too messed up to do any good anymore (they get dented pretty badly), they are either just sold to people who melt them down into other stuff or sold to recyclers. We use several different sizes of steel balls for our armour making. They come in handy for hammering down uneven spots in the metal, so we've got an assortment of steel balls ranging from 1lb to 40lbs.
