In addition to what Tommy said (it is Tommy, right?) having grippers that are rated and vary in strength allow you to know where you stand. So the average #3 is 150? Then if you plan on doing a cert, you want to be able reliably close something that rates higher, perhaps a hard #3 that rates at 160. With this, you know just how strong you are, and what you can consistently do, and what is going to be a stretch.
