How do you properly oil and season a gripper?

I personally don't. I just use as is.

Same. Though I did rub some oil on the springs after cleaning them today.

Vinegar and oil and a dash of salt and pepper. No, seriously, just make sure that dust and chalk haven't accumulated on the spring and hit it with a good lubricant once in a while.

If they start to squeak badly I'll spray some

And that will fix the problem usually you can use piece of paper to get between the coil and just a rag work well.

I wouldn't try to damage the gripper excessively to make it easier

I use Boeshield T-9. We use it at the shop I work at so I decided to use it on my grippers. I had a problem with some rust spots on all of my springs when I moved home to Chicago due to the humidity change and this took care of the problem. Find yourself a lightweight oil like 5-10 weight and that should suffice.

I have used various oils over time and have found silicone oil to be the best, and the only one which completely eliminates squeak.

ditto on the WD40, spray a little on the spring, leave it laying horizontal for a day or two then wipe off the excess and start squeezing.
