steve0
I had these made up at a local steel guy. The handles are 2 3/8" thick. The trainer should come in right under 130lbs if the calculations came in correct. The large one should be in at around 178lbs. I am waiting for the paint to dry and into the basement they will go. The big guy is just a boat anchor at this time. I was able to lift the "trainer" a couple of times.

IROC-Z
Excellent looking DB's! Quick question - how far are the handles buried into the heads of the DB's? I'm in the process of making up a couple Inch trainers, and I'm wondering if milling 1" into the heads is enough or if I should go deeper than that. steve0
I think they went in about 1/4 of an inch. They were confident that the welds should hold up. I am not planning on dropping this from overhead any time soon

As long as the welds are done correct you don’t need to go in at all. You could grind back the edge of the handle part at a 45 degree angle and have the weld go deep into the handle and globe ends. Or just do a one inch deep hole like you mentioned. Both will take the torque of a big drop. To the original post those thick bar dumbbells look great! IROC-Z
Thanks for the info Steve and Rich. Sounds like 1" should be more than enough to keep the handle from snapping off.
Jeff Parker
They look great! If you don't mind sharing, how much did they set you back? Edited March 25, 2012 by Strongmantobe
steve0
They look great! If you don't mind sharing, how much did they set you back? The guy is a family friend. Everything was at his cost.
