Double over hand obviously trains the strength aspect really good, but for deadlifting you need your whole hand fit for the lift. With the mixed grip you have a lot more tension on your skin (which needs to adapt too), the bar slides down the fingers when they open, whereas it more or less rolls down with the DO grip. A heavy mixed grip lift definitly feels way different, tends to be more painful - one has to get used to this, too. And yes, awesome!
