I surpised myself the other day by tearing a whole deck of cards in two.

i hadn't attempted it in several months and had never done a full deck before. i was cleaning out an old desk when i found the deck. i was gonna toss 'em anyway, so i thought "what the heck?" :shifty

:D RIP! :D

i didnt toss them. i carefully returned them to the box.my first deck......i'm gettin' all misty :cry

How did you tear them? :mellow

Lengthwise or widthwise? Anyhow, congrats on that tear! :rock

Congratulations on that big tear! I've attempted that feat only enough to realise just how tough it must be to accomplish. And actually, I was quickly discouraged.

Hi whitleyd, long time no see :) ,

Can you describe how you trained to do that feat ?

How much time did it take you to be able to perform it ?

thanx,

Amaury.

PS: Are you still training with the COCs ?

Sybersnott-

"How did you tear them? Lengthwise or widthwise?"

widthwise. i put one end of the deck in my left hand, palm up&pinkie close to my body, right hand over the top, thumb cloes to my body & twisted like i was opening a jar.

Amaury-

"Can you describe how you trained to do that feat ?"

i didnt train specifically for it, it was an impulse. thats what suprised me so much. my normal traing is mostly wrist roller, pinch gripping, bag catching & CoC.

"How much time did it take you to be able to perform it ?"

not more than a couple of seconds.

"Are you still training with the COCs ?"

yeah, 4-5 times a week. nothing very structured. i am still about a half inch offthe #3. i was having some wrist problems so i backed off for a few months. i'm focused more on gettting rid of my belly these days.

i've been using kettlebells exclusively since the beginning of the year. maybe thats helped in the explosive wrist department for the tear.

Ok, I know what all of you are going to say,"Go to the search engine" well , I am just a big dumb weight lifter. All kidding aside, I use to have a paper on card tearing showing the "How-to's " of it. Well, I lost it. Does someone have a web site where I can find this again ? I thought I got it off of Tom Black's website, But I guess not. Thanks

AMAZING LINK !!!!!!!!!!! :yikes:yikes :stuart :stuart :yikes

I've just managed to tear a 1062 pages phonebook with the technique described and i've never tried before (David you must absolutely try it again)!!! Allright it took me around 10 minutes but no cheating: always grasping the whole beast in my hands. I think i could easily tear a 400-500 pages phone book in less then 1mn with this technique !!

This feat has NOTHING to do with other kind of grip feats like nail bending for example: here it's 70% technique. But let's keep it secret: it will be so much fun to impress my friends. Though it's been the toughest thumb workout i've ever made ! :bow

I can send you a pic of the phonebook torn in half if this is considered has a World class but i would be utterly surprised... :whacked

Now my conclusions: if someone tells me that he can tear a 1000 pages phonebook in half i'll just ask this question: how long to perform the feat ? If the answer is "a few seconds" then :bow:bow:bow , but if it is "a few minutes" then :dry:whistel

Ah!

Amaury.

PS: i tried the technique with a 350 pages magazine and torn a corner out of it in a few seconds... Ah! :tongue

Using this technique-I just managed a 35 card tear!! :D:yikes

It still fatques the hands and is still VERY hard. I dont think some one who doesnt train grip could do it without a lot of practice-even with this technique.

Cool. I will tear a deck in a months time!!

I worked from being able to tear a half deck (27-including the instruction cards) to a full deck in about two weeks. I just used simple progression, added 2-3 cards each time I tried it. Worked just fine, although the technique definitely changes slightly with more cards added. One of the most important pieces of the equation is of course the cards themselves. I have torn 75 cards of one brand (cheap) and only barely managed a max-effort tear of 52 with another. I would estimate that I've torn at least 100 full decks of cards since being able to do it (@ 2001), and I can definitely attest to the difference in difficulty from brand to brand. The Maverick cards (from Walmart) are the absolute hardest to tear, in terms of difficulty. Cheap cards from The Dollar Store are among the easiest. Casino cards are also incredibly difficult to tear. And yes, keep your first deck!

Congrats Whitleyd!

I recieved John Brookfield's new book the other day and he describes card tearing as well. He didn't mention the bending then back and forth like it shows in Ray's link, just twisting them until they tear. Mr. Brookfield suggests starting with 20 and working up from there.

I started with 30 and tore them after only a few twists...then I quarted the halves. Alas I only had that one deck, so I couldnt try for more right away.

I got hold of a few decks today, and later I will see how I do.

If some of you haven't tried this one, you should. It is alot of fun and a great finger workout. My fingertips were strained from trying to keep the cards from fanning out.

Good luck.

I was feelin' froggy today! After PR's with my #2 in both hands, I tore 3 phone books, and it didn't take long for the cards to start calling my name. I found a deck, sweated and grunted for 8-10 minutes, and Voila! A full deck! Definitely not something I'll try every day. My hands need a fair bit of recovery time after that.

Alan, I've found the stronger I became at card tearing, the more often I could tear. Kind of strange in a way, but that's definitely the way it turned out. At my card tearing zenith I was tearing at least 3 decks a workout, with at least 3 workouts a week for a 6 month period. There was one workout (over a 24 hour period) where I tore 11 decks of cards. It didn't take too long before that became far too expensive to do that often. Now I just tear a deck whenever the mood grabs me, which probably averages out to once a month now. Your elapsed time will improve substantially with lots of practice. Good luck and happy tearing!
