Vertical Bar Lift

Just curious as to anyone who trains on the

V-bar lift on a regular basis, how often do you

train on it? What is to much? And how often

is to often. I went from 225 lbs to 300lbs :yikes

which i just pulled up 2 weeks ago in 6

months.

Was that 300 lbs done with or without a hook grip? Is that on a 1" smooth bar? If that was done without a hook on a 1" bar, I think you should be telling us how to train it. :)

I trained on it last winter for a few weeks. I pulled 290 lbs on a 2" non-knurled chrome bar, no hook. Actually, it was the rotating sleeve of a barbell. I did it twice a week after my deadlift.

The guys to talk to are Jim Wylie and David Horne.

Strongmitts,

yes it was done with a hook

grip on a 1" smooth bar

the most I can lift at this

time without a hook is a little

more than 200 lbs

Matt

2Strong the v-bar lift is a lift done with

one hand on a 1" bar

Tou, that's some might impressive poundages!

Emsquared, thanks for clarifying. I've done 250lbs on my 1" vert bar without a hook. Doing this lift once a week yielded good results for me. I train other things usually 4-5 times a week but always did vert bar very last in my routine on the first workout of the week. I would add ten pounds a week and do five reps. Just one top set usually very little warm up if any. At other times I did singles one week alternated with an 8-10 second holds the other day. Again, just one top set. I made good gains with this, so don't be afraid to try something as basic as that. I asked Mr. Wylie about his vert bar training in the past, do a search and you can probably find it.

If you look at comments by people like Jim and David, the one thing you will learn is that it is tough on the hands, particularly the fingers.

I have tried this lift on a 1" square bar (actually a cross-brace from a leg extension unit) and can confirm it does hurt. This lift is definitely on the list of things I want to get good at - it looks so cool pulling up that big stack of plates....

yes pulling over 500lbs is an awesome grip feat

and I am working towards that as a goal :cool

As with all my other grip improvements the v-bar

may be my most impressive in time, but I can

only see that in time
