Tom of Iowa2
Have found someone to build 2 7/16" thick(solid) handled,SOLID steel dumbells. He is building a solid 155#,172#,a 200#,228 and a 240#. Obviously will not have the same 'feel'as the cast replica INCH or the Millenium but will cost a LOT less. The handle will be 1/16" larger(thats the solid steel they have an abundance of in stock and will keep the price down)than the INCH and Millenium so perhaps the EXTRA 1/16" will make up for the fact that these things will probably be more balanced than the cast Iron dumbells?? Would individuals on this forum be willing to pay approx. 90- cents a pound ?for such an implement if it were available by special order??? To wannagrip,PDA,And Fat Bastard Dumbell folks. We have NO intention of selling or marketing loadable dumbells(we have made several already of varying thickness for ourselves) We ARE going to have our solid steel dumbells(155,172,200,228,240) made for personal use and may sell to special orders IF there is any interest... ALSO:Do you think we should use 4 1/2 inches or 5 inches for handle width? We are still hashing this out.(remember these aren't globes..perhaps more width than the replicas?) Hope everyones training is going well..all input..suggestions and feedback is seriously welcomed. Thankyou
Roark
Tom, 5" handles.
Tom of Iowa2
They can go heavier or lighter with these dumbells.Very simple to change. These are our/their preference These weights will be their first batch-for personal use-(they are makeing a pair of the 155's ) The weights should be very accurate(plus/minus no more than a pound?) and the handles precise(exactly 2 7/16"). The guys that went to the 'snowman'(an observation-not criticism)thought the 172 INCH replica handle was bigger?? than the Millenium handle?or it seemed to be?And they reported the Millenium felt slightly knurled?and the INCH replica thicker and VERY slick.....and then we heard Dino Nicks Inch replica weighed 184lbs?? Again this is NOT my product but if you can weld?- they can probably?(again I'm getting ahead of my self..don't hold me to it) be sent UPS(other freight systems of course) in three seperate unpainted, machined pieces. Will have the first units done pretty soon..again just want to see IF others might be interested.......No more reporting on our training but I'll let you know how the 155 feels...or how they both feel ? ***Thanks for the suggestion Roark.DOES EVERYBODY AGREE ON THAT WIDTH? While i'm posting I thought I'd pass on we have added:3 1/2inch, 3 3/4 inch pinch blocks.(alreay have the Old IM and the new Big Block) 2inch,2 3/8inch,3 inch loadable dumbell bars. Full length 2 inch thick bar(7ft 2inches actually) 1 1/8lifting 'ring' Some hard to describe but various size lifting 'bars' for the plier lifts. 3 inch wrist roller(still haven't got around to makeing a little one...) Vertical bar lift(we sanded off all the paint so its nice and rough-hopefully it'll rust up some day ) We have a pair of 200#,conventional dumbells on order. No grippers ...that I know of. The Mac
Tom, Personally, I don't think the extra 1/2" makes that much difference, but I would go for the 5". Good luck on hoisting those babies around!! Edited January 28, 2003 by The Mac
Roark
Tom, The Inch handle is 2.38" diameter; the Inch replica handle is 2.47". Both unknurled. For many years the size of the original was misreported as 2.47". The MB is lightly knurled and is the same diameter as the original Inch. Tom of Iowa2
Roark, Yes i've read that also..but thanks for clarifying. I wonder why Dino Nick Osbornes INCH replica weigh so much?(reportedly 184#??) Yes Josh and Yako(Yako didn't attempt the Mellenium but apparenty grasped it)reported a significant difference between the handles. Mac, I don't think I'll do much 'hoisting' other than i hope to deadlift both the 155's-at the same time The bells aren't really for me(they are for an event dreamed up for the contest)but I'll have access to them. When they are done I'll get some pics.
Sybersnott
I tried the grip on the Inch rep at the AOBS, and it really didn't bother me. Go to 4 1/2" grip, or even 5". I might be interested in the 155# DB; kinda as a trainer for the Inch rep.
OldGuy
I have large hands, but have no problem with a 4'' long by 2 3/8'' diameter handle.
